I really have no clue how my parents learned spelling in their day
gdad: "how do you spell Lily [gsis's baby's name]?"
gmun: "it's the same as the flower"
gdad: "how do you spell that? Lyly?"
gmun: "that would be pronounced Lie-lee or Lee-lee, what other vowel could you use?"
gdad: "So Liyly?"
I'd get it if he was confused about one L or two, but aaagh over 70 years and it's like he's never seen English wordsss
