I'm not familiar with this one so I looked it up and huh, it's by Jason Robert Brown? How interesting. I do like one of his works. Also its Broadway run had a cast and band made up of wholly teenagers which is crazy to me. And it has a movie adaptation so maybe I'll watch that one of these days.

Funnily enough I did watch this one live. It was a community production, by the same community that made Next to Normal. But I barely remember anything about it, so yeah. I actually remember more things about it from Waiting in the Wings' video on it. It's such a wild ride. The costume designer allegedly misheard "Grease" (the musical) as "Greece" and made togas and stuff instead of cool youthful street look. And they had a big white stair for some reason. Really wacky stuff.

I was really surprised when they first revealed that first image of Diana and Sigma, it looks so dark and serious after ZTD's free hanging tatas and cavewoman Clover. But it did make everyone look like free default character models that come with a game engine.

Cats

(original show not that horrifying movie)
Cats is a guilty pleasure of mine. I think my first time fully watching it was the movie though. We had a community showing here and my theater community got invited. People were baffled lol.

But after that I watched the proshot and yeah, it's really fun. The story is barely there because it's based on a collection of poems but hey, what little story there is works just fine.

I like quite a lot of the numbers, including Jellicle Song for Jellicle Cats, Old Gumbie Cat, Mr. Mistoffelees, Skimbleshanks the Railway Cat, Old Deuteronomy. I also kinda like Mungonjerry and Rumpleteazer and Bustopher Jones. I'm not really a big dance guy so I can't fully enjoy the dance number but I do appreciate it.

And I kinda like the song Beautiful Ghosts from the movie but there's an excellent video essay on why it just ruins the Grizzabella's story by having Victoria downplaying her grief.

Memory is fine but really really overdone.

Favorite Song: Skimbleshanks the Railway Cat

The Book of Mormon
Oh man, Trey Parker, Robert Lopez, and Matt Stone hit it out of the park with this one.

It's so irreverent (especially at the time) but really really funny. The themes can be seen as problematic nowadays, especially regarding the African/Ugandan jokes, but well... personally, I'd hope that the audience watching it has enough media literacy in the first place.

I love nearly all the songs here, they're well-crafted with funny lines in nearly every one. I can't get over how Turn It Off rhymes dancer with cancer; Hasa Diga Eebowai really drops a bomb since until that infamous line the musical is clean fun; and the Joseph Smith American Moses sequence is just a brilliant parody of The King and I's Small House of Uncle Tom. My least favorite one is probably Baptize Me because it's mostly a straight love duet with just some innuendos thrown in. Sal Tlay Ka Siti is criminally underrated.

The character development of Elder Price and Cunningham is really good. I like how their relationship develops and gets turned on its head when Cunningham gets to take charge and use his unbridled optimism and love for all things nerdy for good.

And for a supposedly blasphemous musical, it does reconstruct the idea of religion by the end of it. Like, some parts might be made up and there's no way to know, but it can still inspire some good. (Though of course you're free to agree or disagree with this)

I'd love to watch this musical live one day. And one of my bosses at my job loves it and it's probably the only musical he knows lol.

Favorite Songs: Three-way tie between Hasa Diga Eebowai, Turn It Off, and Joseph Smith American Moses.

Come From Away
Oh man, I really love this musical. I love its message of finding the best in humanity even amidst one of the worst tragedies in modern history. I've always loved stories about communities like this. And I love the story behind its production as well. It's just amazing that they got to perform in Gander, with many of the real people behind the story in the audience.

The music is really well crafted. It's brought me to tears so often. Heave Away is fun. Me and the Sky is empowering and tragic. 38 Planes (reprise)/Somewhere in the Middle of Nowhere is bittersweet. Welcome to the Rock and the Finale are also really good songs to introduce is to the Rock.

We honor what we lost but we also commemorate what we found

And acting wise, it's crazy. It's a true ensemble show and everyone has to play like at least 3 different roles and in rapid succession too. And I like that it has roles for older actors as well.

I've actually watched this live! A community theater put it on back in like 2019. The founder (who played Diana in the musical) recently got in trouble with the police because of several ticket concert scams but there's neither here nor there.

Anyway, it's really good. I love the pop-rock score. It's brilliant, and more people should listen to it.

The story is surprisingly heartbreaking. It shows just how complicated living with a mental issue is, for the person themself as well as for the people around them. Really recommended. The twist is brilliant as well.

Oh and the lyrics to Superboy and Invisible Girl is also really smart with the double meaning. Not to be confused with Sharkboy and Lavagirl.

What a classic!

I think it really exemplifies the golden era of Hollywood musicals. It's got a lighthearted story, some drama, and catchy tunes. And most of the songs came from someplace else.

I wouldn't say it's my favorite musical (especially since the music serves as more of an entertaining interlude instead of a storytelling tool), but I underestand why it's on so many lists. It's just dang enjoyable.

One of my friends is really into this musical and I'm pretty sure I'd like it a lot too, I just haven't found the time or opportunity to really watch it.

I know that it's based on a movie and that's it's pretty edgy and crass. There's something about a chainsaw and I'm sure at least one of the Heathers ended up dead (maybe all of them). There's also a guy who's all kind of fucked up. So yeah, looking forward to watching it.

Frozen II
Oh man, the story behind the development of this movie is just so fascinating. Apparently they still don't know who the voice calling Elsa is until, like, two months before premiere or something wild like that.

As for the movie itself, it's just so meh. The plot doesn't really gel together (probably because of the aforementioned development issues), none of the songs are truly meaningful (which is bad considering it's a musical) to the plot and characters, and the pacing is all wonky.

I'm grateful that it introduced Kristoff x Ryder though, they have more chemistry than Kristoff x Anna (and it's also so frustrating that he just couldn't build up the courage to propose to her).

There were some potentially interesting ways they could have developed the Arendelle colonialism and imperialism plot thread but it didn't really go anywhere either.

Good point about Day One - Two - Three, though I haven't actually watched the musical so I can't actually confirm if they go straight to each other. Glad you enjoyed it and I also love the part you quoted and I can even relate to it at times.

Aitakatta Kamoshirenai is interesting. I do like the song and it's catchy. But it's a sort of a counterpoint song to the song Aitakatta by AKB48. The original song's in major key and this one's in minor, making it sound more wistful.

Really interesting!
So it's s musical album that features members of popular bands, including Panic! at the Disco, whom I even recognize.

The story sounds very, uh, cosmic. I'm usually not into too out-there stuff. But maybe I'll be pleasantly surprised.

Also I tried listening to one of the songs at random and it didn't really catch my attention. But maybe I'd like some of the other songs better.

Finally, I do appreciate the grit here.
Recording began in October 2007 with Rudy Gajadhar recording drums. Due to budget limitations, Thomas elected to primarily use software for the orchestral parts rather than hiring musicians. More than half of the guest vocalists were recorded in person, while the remainder of the vocalists were sent electronic files with Thomas singing their parts. The vocalists then recorded their parts and returned them electronically.

The Greatest Showman
Ahh The Greatest Showman. I'll always be thankful to it for introducing a lot more people to musicals, but man it's just... Very formulaic. Like it's the pinacle of Hollywood musicals. Everything is just perfectly tuned for the general audience to love it. It's not really taking chances.

And it worked!

So yeah, I do enjoy it for what it is but I don't really listen to its songs often at all. But if it comes up on the radio or at an open mic event, I'm not mad about it. A friend of mine sang This Is Me at an open mic like two weeks ago and I enjoyed it.

Of course, it takes a lot of creative liberties from the real story of PT Barnum, but well... I don't expect much anything from this very commercial movie.

Shout out to it for inspiring one of the best musical episodes of Honest Trailes though:

Though it's not my favorite song from the movie. It's got to go to be La Resistance, a Les Mis-style 11 o'clock massive multiplayer ensemble number that incorporates parts of the other songs. It's really really good.

They may cut your dick and half!
And serve it to a pig!
And though it hurts, you'll laugh
And dance a dickless jig
But that's the way it goes
In war, you're shat upon, though you die
La Resistance lives on!

TBH I forgot most of the story by now lol, I should rewatch it one of these days.

Wicked
Oh boy, what to say about Wicked that hasn't been said?

I can easily see why it's so popular and has the longevity that it has. It's very entertaining with a lot of showstopping moments but with a strong enough emotional core and even a touch of political message. It's just very well written and has different appeals for everyone. For tourists and younger people, the spectacle is more than enough. For older audience members, the more complicated characterization and relationships are juicy enough to dig into. I'd wager it plays a big part in inspiring Disney to make films like Maleficent and Cruella (which, in turn, gave rise to Twisted).

Particularly, I really like the uneasy friendship between Elphaba and Glinda. It's so fun seeing how two characters who are so different become pals, sisters, and advisors.

On the music side, Schwartz's music is really lovely, with some catchy and memorable compositions. I do like the group songs more than the ballads but that's not saying much since I almost always do.

It's also quite different from the novel, which I read and shook me. It's just so much darker and grittier than the musical. I wouldn't say I love it but I do like it. It's rumored that the upcoming movie adaptation takes inspiration from the novel in addition to the stage, so that'll be interesting to see.

The trailer for the upcoming movie looks pretty good IMO and it has potential to be really big. I'm cautiously optimistic.

Oh and finally, I got a lot of mileage from a part of the lyrics last year when I was doing a show I really loved but so many things didn't go as expected.

That's why I couldn't be happier
No, I couldn't be happier
Though it is, I admit
The tiniest bit
Unlike I anticipated
But I couldn't be happier
Simply couldn't be happier
Well, not "simply"
'Cause getting your dreams
It's strange, but it seems
A little, well, complicated
There's a kind of a sort of, cost
There's a couple of things get, lost
There are bridges you cross you didn't know you crossed
Until you've crossed
And if that joy, that thrill
Doesn't thrill like you think it will
Still
With this perfect finale
The cheers and ballyhoo
Who
Wouldn't be happier?
So I couldn't be happier
Because happy is what happens
When all your dreams come true
Well, isn't it?
Happy is what happens
When your dreams come true!
