Ah, last year such titles were known off as "Gravity Rush 2," "The Last Guardian," "Horizon: Zero Dawn," and a "God of War" title. At least one of those had less wrong with it in terms of story or gameplay than BotW did, but make the mistake of coming out the same time as the over-the-top hyped BotW. No, Sony didn't really shit the bed in E3. They just showed off a handful of titles that looked decent or better. Nintendo, however, had BotW and that's all you remember.
Still, though, Nintendo really has to bring their A game on this one. Switch rides on having a better library than what we've seen revealed so far. Metroid needs new life that apologizes both for "Other M" and Nintendo's general attitude toward "AM2R" even after they struck it down legally. And Sony is, meanwhile, likely to come out with a number of "winning" announcements this year, if cycles of E3 performance are to be believed.
Also in the meantime, Squeenix is bound to show off projects we may or may not know about already, and in greater detail. I heard they started patching things up with Nintendo and have a project with them, but we'll see how that goes this year at E3. SE's other projects are likely to be more Playstation-centric.
Microsoft... Probably more generic shooters with their rabid fans going "We totally won this year get rekt!" The rest of us will just shake our heads. Again. As long as Nintendo outperforms Microsoft it should be fine, but I doubt it'll "win" this year.
