If I access the WorldWideWeb using a VPN, will that prevent my landlord from seeing the more dubious sites I access using his wireless network?

I must have these answers.

No. But it is also true that the sites that I've been frequenting since I moved in last June are fairly tame.

Serious answer if I were in an apartment I would not connect to the internet without a vpn. And I'm not talking just for porn. Any hacker in the complex might try to get into your accounts or monitor your activity.

People are worried about porn but that's like the last thing an attacker would be interested in.

Question: Would my landlord get in trouble if I used a VPN to download files that aren't technically open-source?

No, and something not being open source doesn't mean you can't download it, that's not the right term.

If you're using a torrent my advice is don't unless you know what you're doing. You have to configure it to use a VPN.

A VPN will hide all downloads from a browser.
Yep, with a VPN the only thing your ISP will be able to see is the transfer load. They can probably guess what you're doing based on that, but they can't and won't come down on you for it. They won't bother your landlord because they won't have a case to go off of.

Depends what you want to use it for. Tor is free and more secure, but wouldn't be recommended for streaming/large downloads.
not a lot, just forever

Tor sucks because you're banned from most websites. I wouldn't use it unless you're doing something illegal like buying drugs. Even then, you'll just get scammed/poisoned with filler, because no accountability.

Nordvpn is legit

Google Fi VPN is a joke. They literally just track you harder. Only good for bypassing streaming restrictions. At least until Google sets up a communication line with Comcast/some media troll's lawyers.
