I guess what bothers is me is the "Look at how much these people are making, I should have just done this" thing, like you are not successful at all in what you are currently doing, yet you think can rise to the top percentile of esports players or youtubers or onlyfans or daytraders, even programmers, or realtors. and just start making bank easily.

is it just because some things are "new", people don't understand how competition works. never heard someone say I should have just played in the NBA instead of my day job, and yet for some reason everybody thinks they could have a 10 million youtube subscribers or win Dota TI with ease.
Here's something only us Gen X are aware of... the cost of doing nothing has increased over time.

Yes, 100 years ago the cost of doing nothing was 0... because how could it be anything else. But now, because of poor public services and anti-loitering techniques the cost of doing nothing is above 0.

Its a combination of the Dunning-Kruger effect and con artists imo. People who know a little bit tend to overestimate their own abilities. Then you get a variety of con artists who target gullible people to sell their get rich quick schemes or self help or whatever

Yes. If you get in while it's new, the top percentile people haven't shown up yet and even a complete failure can make bank for a while before any real competition shows up and steamrolls the game. Same thing happens with day 1 in online games.

My friend quit his job and did the following to make money instead;
Day trade crypto
Mine crypto
Mine altcoins
Arbitrage altcoins
Tried to make an MMO
Rented out to AirBNB
Pre-ordered a Cybertruck to flip it (he plans on buying it by borrowing money)
Scalped GPUs
Became a licensed for real estate sale and became some guy's "apprentice"
Sold decals on etsy

He's 36k in debt.

It's almost like he just went down the list of the "free passive income" traps. The only way to do that is to have money already and just let it grow.
there is only one thing that's a guaranteed money tree: already having money

Was just tired of a day job and climbing the usual social ladders. Just find something good, stick with it, get your promotions or transfer laterally to somewhere else with better advancement opportunities. Too many grifters these days.
