That's mainly because they've killed the market. The Big Two barely pull in 100k for even their most popular issues (and most do way worse), while indie comics are being sold to an even smaller fanbase.
The end result is that you're rarely going to be able to find people to talk about any given title, because comparatively speaking, no one is reading it.
It's a shame, because before the bottom dropped out of the market titles would get cancelled for selling less than 250k, and some of the biggest titles could break a million. Those days are looooong gone, though.
The collectors' boom (and then bust) of the 90s definitely played a role in that, but writing across the board kind of took a major shit about 12 years ago, and there really doesn't seem to be a light on the horizon there. You can still occasionally find an interesting and well-told story in independent comics, but those are usually few and far between, and hard to find in an ocean of shit.
