The gummy stuff is Turkish delight, a popular gel and sugar delicacy usually flavoured with rose water or something from what I've Googled.
I tried it too a long time ago myself and while it was alright I agree it doesn't really work and would not ever try again as I'd rather just eat a Crunchie.
