Salty girl looking for cutie to crush the muffin.
Play any of the Madden games from the last 10 years or so, they have more complex RPG systems than most modern RPGs.

Do you mean video games or tabletop?

Because I guarantee there's tabletop RPGs for various sports. But the only video game I can think off of the top of my head was Base Wars for the NES, where you could upgrade robot baseball players with different parts, which kind of bordered on being an early RPG-style game.

I mean, Blitzball in FFX is basically underwater US football. If you mean what the rest of the world calls football, then I'm drawing a blank.

Strike that, reverse it.

Blitzball is straight up soccer. US football doesn't have wingers, goalies, and strikers.

I don't know of any football RPGs but the soccer game Football Manager is kind of rpg esque in a way but there is no real story outside of what you choose to do. And you are the manager and not an individual player, but player progression feels kind of rpg esque without the visible EXP like random battles.

And soccer doesn't have people running with the sporty Macguffin in their arms.

Still closer to soccer, hockey or water polo than American football.
Blood Bowl is american football dnd-ified. It's got a neat steam adaptation (I've only ever played the first one)

NCAA Football '12 felt like an rpg actually. You had to call up recruits, try to tell them what they wanted to hear, make promises, increase your pipeline (lol) and the school's prestige star rating. All in a time limit with games to play or simulate. I am not explaining it well but that was the closest I ever got to an American Football game feeling like an rpg.

Just adding points to stats doesn't count imo. So any Madden is out. Even NFL Head Coach was just a glorified coaching simulator and never as good or interesting as I thought it could be.

Blitzball is definitely closer to soccer.

Yeah it's this.

NCAA Football 14 is also quite good and is probably the most played in its series.

Having a goal is good, but don't let your goal depress you. Goals are meant to inspire.
