Because people were less likely to murder you then.This is actually statistically untrue. There were tons more unsolved highway murders and killers back in the day. The murder rate, and violent crime rate in general, has gone down over the years. It's just that people are more aware of the risk now, whereas back then people just didn't know or didn't care.
