Do you think TNG was the best star trek TV series ever?

Do you
It is probably the "best" in terms of high brow TV. Some episodes were groundbreaking stuff.

I saw the episode "Tapestry" as a young kid and as someone with severe anxiety, it taught me that it is okay to make mistakes. That really put a new perspective on my life because I was terrified of making mistakes. I thought that mistakes made me a lesser person. To date still my favorite Star Trek episode.

That said, over all my favorite Star Trek series is still Deep Space Nine.
No, its the second best after DS9

I was gonna bring that up, loved that episode. Is it universally loved by TNG fans?

Yes, followed closely by DS9. TNG has the sense of exploration and adventure DS9 is lacking, but both are great. I haven't seen whatever the latest is, but of the ones I saw, those two are by far the best. Voy and Ent had their problems. I couldn't get more than a couple of eps into the original.

It is generally well regarded because it is basically a twilight zone episode, but it does fall into the basket of episodes that exist on a magical basis (Holodeck episodes, Q episodes) which are generally not well regarded.
Overall yes. (ignoring the first couple of seasons), although DS9 is very close.
Season 1 & 2 of DS9 wasn't good either.

It usually takes a season or two for these shows to find footing.

Not at all.

Deep Space Nine and Lower Decks are definitely better and I think placing TNG above them is just nostalgia tbh

I personally enjoy TOS more than Next Gen, but I can see how thats an unpopular opinion.

Yes, but I enjoyed DS9 more.
.
I haven't watched everything. I watched all of TNG first, then I started delving into some of the others - so far I've watched 30 random episodes of Voyager and ~5 episodes each of DS9 and TOS.

So far, TNG is still my fave.

Yeah, it was pretty badass and original.

'Yes'

although I prefer Voyager.
No. I'm a TOS guy.

There are some great TNG episodes, but there are also some that very much feel like the '80s and not the future.

What?

Some Q episodes, including Tapestry, are based entirely on magical nonsense. Sci-fi fans don't particularly care for magical nonsense because we like everything to have an internal consistency and rules to the way the universe functions.

But Tapestry is strong enough with its character conflict, storytelling and messaging that it overrides this.
TNG was good but people tend to forget the first 1/2 of the series was pretty bad (or that it even exists).

Q eventually became a good character.

His introduction in episode 1 as basically god judging humanity, while Picard makes the argument that humanity has already reached enlightenment (they haven't), in a sci-fi show was not great however.

"Humans are savage"

"NOOO HUMANS AREN'T SAVAGE"

I would have just said "yeah we know lol"

There was another one where Riker was offered to join the Q as a test and riker was like "nooo I will never give in to absolute power" and I'm sitting here like "A starfleet officer of his rank would immediately contact the federation and use this opportunity to establish diplomatic relations".

Early seasons were rough.
As someone who likes SciFi, but doesn't particularly care about Star Trek I rank them

TNG
TOS

Then everything else I've seen is pretty meh
DS9, Voyager, Enterprise. Haven't seen enough of anything newer to judge.

?huh?........ it's just a box.
I like Voyager. especially Janeway. Its just such an interesting character. You have this woman who's completely and obviously insane. But her insane plans work out so well that it led to her being a captain and then an admiral. Its beautiful watching the universe bend to this one person's will, because it simply has no choice.

At least there's a positive take on Tapestry. I saw it while in between jobs, and let's just say it would've given me an existential crisis at any other time lol.

Enjoyed it, some episodes more than others. The aforementioned Tapestry is a favorite, as is Cause and Effect, and Darmok is a hands down favorite. Although to commit to TNG as the best series would feel unfair to Deep Space Nine, which has many good ones. In the pale moonlight is likely my favorite episode out of all series.

After Voyager I haven't seen much. A few seasons of Discovery when our Dutch Netflix temporarily had them, but it's gone now, more recent series are on other platforms I don't have, and since Discovery didn't quite click with me, I'm not sure I am too bothered. The one that does intrigue me is Lower Decks, but again no access.

Why though? If not between jobs, given you a crisis? Great great episode. Did not consider TNG overall to be a great TV show though, it seems to be more popular on this site, than just generally among Americans, wonder why.
