Expedition 33, I loved oblivion back when i first played it but thats the thing ive played it so happy to wait until its cheaper.
Already bought Oblivion and I've heard good things about 33 so I'll buy that, too

Idk much about expedition 33 but I choose that.

I have the same feelings about Bethesda games as I do the Beatles. As in, they're shallow AND pedantic
BADoglick to the Max!
I still have Oblivion and never play it, I don't need a new version.

Expedition 33 looks like a Soulslike both in terms of gameplay and aesthetic, so I have zero interest in it.

Huh? It's turn-based with an active parry/dodge system. I've seen it compared more to a CRPG/JRPG hybrid in reviews

Most of the reviews I've seen refer to it as a turn-based RPG with strong Soulslike elements.

It's entirely possible that's wrong though. I haven't delved deep into it, because I was mostly turned off by that description and what I saw of the aesthetic.

I saw Journo rumors say the Oblivion remaster had "Souls-like gameplay" when it's the exact same as the original. Presumably because in Oblivion Melee drains stamina and as we all know, Dark Souls invented stamina systems /s.

So at this point if any reveiwer brings up terms related to Soulsgames I'm gonna assume they have no idea what they are talking about.
I've noticed that "Soulslike" is a common tag that store pages use nowadays, whether it's applicable or not, because they can market that to the gaming audience at large. Makes sense, since the genre straight up killed character action games and hijacked the overall action genre for the longest freaking time.

pretty much what fnaf did to horror for over a decade, except at least souls games are actually decent and other games outside that franchise at least get made from time to time.

There were lots of good horror games outside of that style made in those years, though. Souls easily did more damage to its genre than fnaf

Nothing compares to the damage Halo did to its genre though

Exactly! That and many other good games I'm trying to play. Xbox has gotten way too many new games here lately and I don't have enough time to play them.

I can't deny, gamepass seems good when you have 2 good new releases at the same time like this.

I don't necessarily disagree. But that's not the only sort of context I was hearing it in.

For example, here's a quote from one of the more strongly positive endorsements/reviews I just read today (from Penny Arcade):

" People have said that something is the Dark Souls of Something Else so many times that now we know to immediately attack and exile that person from our lands, but Dark Souls is just one of the modern exemplars it throws into the pot - turn based combat goosed by brutal Souls-like timings is wild and the speedruns here are going to be off the chain. "

Nothing about that really makes me want to ever play this game.

I get that everybody is gushing about how awesome it apparently is (and that's fine - other people are allowed to like things I don't). But they did that for Elden Ring too and I didn't want to play that either. Nearly every positive I hear cited about why the game is so great are all things I either don't care about or actively dislike.

I've played a bit of E33 and it's pretty impressive. The production value is off the charts for the size of the team that made it.

Outside of the Dodge/Parry mechanics, it's kind of a standard "linear" party-based JRPG. It's not entirely linear, but maps are structured as the typical narrow corridors.

It seems interesting, but maaan is it depressing. It's one of those games/movies with a persistently somber atmosphere and that's just hard for me to trek through for an extended period of time.

I ended up reading a spoilery interpretation of the entire story and was satisfied.

Oblivion Remastered is Oblivion. The makeover seems very impressive while you're still in the first dungeon, but as soon as you get to the imperial city, characters are as ugly as ever. The world itself is nice and beautiful, but so was the original game and the performance of the remake leaves a lot to be desired.

it's a fucking turn based rpg, what the fuck gameplay have you been watching

both the founder, co founder, and creative director cite final fantasy 7, 8, 9, 10, and persona 5 as the main inspiration, there aint a goddamn thing soulslike about the game, it's just persona 5's battle system with final fantasy 10s turn order management but also you can counterattack enemies

it's damn near the exact type of game you wax nostalgic for

If they're citing Final Fantasy 8 and Persona 5 as their main inspirations, then it's definitely not the sort of game I wax nostalgic for.

I think people are comparing it to Souls games because of the parry/dodge system specifically, which is not a great comparison.

Sure, parrying can be a crucial tactic to some of the more difficult bosses, and some of the parry timings can be unforgiving, but it's a helluva stretch to compare it to Souls games. It's not like Fromsoft invented dodging and parrying...

Not looking to convince you to play the game PO - I ultimately am unbothered whether you do or don't - just offering my two cents. I'd say comparisons to FF and Persona a more appropriate, and it sounds like that's a turnoff for you too so

I've literally never said this, you probably need to throttle back on the drugs.

I don't wax nostalgic about turn-based RPGs because I've always been fine with "action RPGs" and "hack-and-slash" style RPG stuff like Diablo or the Dark Alliance games. Nor was I one of the whiners when Mass Effect 2/3 and Dragon Age 2 went more "action" versus turn-based. I was fine with the original Kingdom Hearts game (and my eventual growing distaste for that franchise had almost nothing to do with gameplay). I don't really consider turn-based action to be an innate mechanic that somehow makes games better. Plenty of turn-based games were also shit. I've never been nostalgic about it, or demanded that it come back and "save" modern gaming.

If anything, I wax nostalgic for well-written dialogue trees like early BioWare games or even point-and-click adventure games. I don't want 1980s JRPGs back, I want 1998-2013 (give or take) WRPGs back. For every BGII that I loved, there was also a Deus Ex. For every KotOR there was a Jade Empire.

I loathe FF8 and dislike P5 more for the story, characters, and aesthetics more than anything to do with their gameplay. Even with the Soulsborn games, while the "frustration gameplay" is a large part of why I dislike them, the aesthetics and tone are also part of the problem for me. If a setting feels like Game of Thrones fucked HP Lovecraft, I'm probably going to lose interest in it really quickly.

Ironically, Elden Ring was the "Skyrim" of Dark Souls games. It took the Souls formula and hindered it with drab, repetitive environments and copy/paste dungeons in a bloated open world. It was a decent game, but only in spite of it all, not because of it.

The art direction, too. It's spot on for a Souls-Like. Which I think is wonderful. More games need to have interestingly designed environments and enemies.
i wish half the enviroment styles were in souls games tbh

It's closer to Super Mario RPG than Dark Souls.

I played an Early Access version of this and it felt kind of jank.

It's definitely interesting though and CLEARLY takes influence from Dark Souls in its gameplay. I might revisit it, because the world does seem cool.
