You better watch out
You better not cry
You better not pout
Im telling you why

Santa Claus is coming to town

Hes making a list,
Checking it twice,
Gonna find out whos naughty or nice.
Santa Claus is coming to town

He sees you when youre sleeping
He knows when youre awake
He knows if youve been bad or good
So be good for goodness sake

A lot of that "could" be interpreted like it was meant to be, as a song to convince children to behave so they get they're presents.

But "You better watch out", I have a hard time understanding as anything other than a threat, lol.
It's basically a threat to little kids, be nice or else!

Many "children's songs" are actually describing a fairly disturbing event if you pay attention to what the lyrics are actually describing.

By the previous logic it sounds like another way of saying "be careful"

Like the song could be interpreted as "do whatever you want, but don't get mad at me when Santa gives you nothing for Christmas"
Will you recognize me?
Call my name or walk on by?
Back then people just punished kids the good old fashion way, telling them be good or else no gifts is way more modern up to date way to "punish" kids.

You should look at some modern "music" and their lyrics though. It's wild out there.
