it's not the abomination everyone claims it is... but it is pretty weak.

Undeserving if its 31% on Rotten Tomatos, it's definitely at least a 45%

I havent seen it, but the over-hate that it gets is so fucking cringe.
Tell my tale to those who ask. Tell it truly, the ill deeds, along with the good, and let me be judged accordingly. The rest.. is silence.
Have you seen the original recently?

I havent seen the original in a long time as well. I just know/assume that the story is very basic and that it is an animation showcase above anything else. It is still iconic though.

This is Ghostbusters reboot all over again.

New movie is announced.

The usuals go on about how its ruined cause "woke"

Movie come out and kinda sucks, with reasons having nothing to do with woke.

The other side insist it is actually good, and if you don't like it its because of being "anti "woke"". I guess as a counter to the "anti "woke"" brigade.
?huh?........ it's just a box.
I didn't notice anything woke-coded in the movie; I just thought the acting was inhumanly unnatural, ironically except for the CGI characters, and that the new songs are completely forgettable and the ending could used some tweaking.

It's nice when you meet people fully outside of that binary. I work with a guy who definitely says stuff I don't agree with ("Alex Jones is right sometimes!") but he also says stuff like "the Ghostbusters reboot wasn't that bad" and doesn't give a shit about any of the culture war stuff.

Yeah, these live action Disney remakes are garbage. Nothing more needs to be said.

The usual suspects were just uppity that Snow White wasn't white enough.

It looked like one of the biggest train wrecks imaginable even before Rachel Zegler kept running her mouth and offending everybody. And after watching the 2016 Ghostbusters, I'm a lot less inclined to give terrible-looking movies a chance.

In general, most of the live-action Disney remakes have been pretty bad. The only ones I enjoyed were Pete's Dragon (where I wasn't a fan of the original) and the Jungle Book. Others ranged from mediocre to downright awful, with some hilariously questionable decisions in a few of them (like Jasmine's random song number in Aladdin -- ie, "I Won't Be Quiet" which comes out of nowhere and ends with her being quiet, so wtf was that? )

But Disney in general has been in a bit of a slump.

Technically, the criticism still strikes at a few of the issues. If they hadn't done a gender-bent team, you wouldn't have the same main cast, which would've drastically changed the movie for the better. And a lot of the jokes that didn't land were overtly social or political (where, even if the political bent was reversed, they probably would've still bombed).

There are precious few at ease / With moral ambiguities / So we act as though they don't exist.
Saw it on streaming. Didn't really watch any of the publicity but knew that it was pretty derided because of the magical creatures and the actress hating men or something.Tried to keep an open mind but the lead actress really came across like she didn't want to be there. It kind of reminded me of that family guy episode where Stewey meets the host of the children's show that he likes and as soon as the takes done she's drinking and cursing and bulling everyone. She just had that energy of don't meet your heroes written all over her face.
The conceptual issue with the live action remakes is they're "not terrible but worse than the animation" at best.

The only real reason to watch them is if you're curious or a diehard hater of animation.

Pretty much. If they were correcting something about the animated original, that might be a bit more meaningful, but that just hasn't been the case and most of them just suffer for trying to directly translate something designed for animation into a medium where it's generally harder to do fantastic things (both because of the effects needed and because you can get away with a lot more suspension of disbelief in animation). Especially in a world where streaming services mean you have the original available to watch as readily as the remake, there's just no reason not to watch the original instead.

They're generally more about preserving trademarks than creating anything really desirable. They could probably achieve that more cheaply, given how bloated these remakes' budgets tend to be, but they usually turn at least a bit of a profit, so that doesn't really matter.

I made myself watch that one the whole way through, and there were parts of it I liked.

--Came into it as a Melissa McCarthy fan, and that remained
--Came into it not knowing who Kate McKinnon was, and now I'm a fan
--Loved how the original Ghostbusters guest starred, and liked the twist on how Winston popped up

As for live action Snow White, I wanted actual short folks for the dwarves and really don't see much reason to to see the film otherwise, being that I already know how the story went.

Disney should keep making live-action remakes though, since Lilo and Stitch was impressive. All I know is sometimes, some crimes, go slipping through the cracks..But these two, gum shoes..(^o^)'
