In fighting games, does a character's tier placement affect if you main them?

sometimes i main bottom tiers, other times mid tiers, though it is rare i have top tier mains

it is pretty much entirely dependent on who is fun. sometimes that fun character is like NightWarriors Rikuo or Kabal and is good. Other times you have things that are bad like Bowser or Xrd Potemkin.
