I had emergency surgery to pull a tooth several weeks ago. Recovery sucked, no doubt about it, and I would certainly have appreciated having my wife at home to help take care of me (she was out of town visiting family and could not get back for a couple days).
But I got through it. Unless he has additional dietary restrictions, "special meals" mostly means things like applesauce, gelatin, pudding, maybe spme broth later tonight but DEFINITELY not right away: the name of the game is really soft stuff without any crumbs or other debris. The dentist will have provided further instructions. Make no mistake, he
is
in pain, weak, and bleeding, and your comfort would doubtless be much appreciated. I can empathize with his situation, having been in it recently. But you are not required to set yourself on fire to keep him warm, so make sure you aren't doing that.
My advice: go into work, tell them there has been something of an emergency, and ask if you can get your affairs in order with them quickly and go home right away. This lets you separate from them cleanly, while still getting much if not most of the day with him.
