Gohan should've absolutely been the true end game of the series and been the MC of Super

Goku returning as the MC in the Buu saga undoes everything the series had been building up to that point and has been reduced to an exercise of power scaling

Maybe have Gohan, Vegeta, Gotenks and possibly Krillin, do a group final blow
Should have ended with Frieza

This is also true but I don't mind the Cell Saga as it seems to be a true hand off to Gohan as Goku's successor. Unfortunately the Buu saga immediately undoes this. I don't mind making Goku into more of a teacher role where he gives Goten and Trunks the ability to fuse, AND gives them the idea of SSJ3, but making him the MC by the end was still a terrible idea. Imo it should've been a combo of Gotenks and Gohan to show that Vegeta and Goku's kin are capable of keeping the world safe and ultimately handing off the duty to them

Gohan needed to take him down and grow to be a little cynical.

Agreed though. Cannot believe they did Gohan like that. Spend almost the entire series building this kid up, showing the hardship he's overcome, the pain he's had to endure, the enemies he took down like Cell. But highlighting very much so he couldn't have taken down Cell without help from his dad and everyone else. When things were at their worst, he needed that mental pep talk from his daddy to persevere and dig deep. He wasn't ready to be the Hero of the planet. And that's what the Buu saga was about before the stupid ending.

A good amount of the saga built up to it which made it even more lame when he didn't get to take down Buu.
  • The Great Saiyama arc was pretty in your face about it. He granted himself the role, and played it up hard striving for glory and attention. 2 character flaws Goku would never in a million years have. Which set the foundation for his character arc. To grow more like his father.
  • The whole season was also self-aware about how ridiculous super saiyan transformations can get. Little kids fuse. There's some electricity. Goku grows longer hair. The show even pokes fun of that. And then here comes Gohan's "transformation". He finally gets his training with Old Kai, and he unlocks his latent power. We get to see him transform. And he looks exactly the same. He looks like a human. And that's what his latent power unlocked, the power that rest within his human blood.

Gohan gets this absolutely badass entrance. Piccolo even mistakes him for Goku

He's cocky and arrogant as ever showing he's got some much needed learning to do. He gets brutally beat the fuck down both physically and mentally. Buu wages some absolutely filthy psychological warfare against Gohan. Beaten the fuck down, ridiculed about how weak you are without your father, and manipulating your mentor's thoughts against you. Gohan was in a seriously fucked up position. The stakes were higher than any other fight in the series, more than any of Goku's. And this could have been a turning point for his character. There literally wasn't a soul alive to help him at this point. It was on him to grow right here and find a way to win and save the world.

It would have been a truly fantastic ending to the series.

Gohan was always a weak scrub
I kinda like the fact that Gohan just doesn't have the same innate fighting ability of Goku. Having him basically be Goku 2.0 is lame. Having him be the one who has immense strength but no real "feel" for fighting makes for a unique Saiyan in the series.

Goku - Ultra Instinct to a tee, just had innate ability to fight from basically birth. Something that is quintessential to him.

Vegeta - Trained to be the perfect Warrior from birth, his skill is from a lifetime of training AS a Saiyan. His growth into Ultra Ego finally gives him growth that isn't just about being slightly behind Goku, despite growing into arguably being a better person?

Gohan - Not trained to become a powerful Warrior nor Having innate ability inherent to himself, his immense strength is undisputed but will always be a blunt hammer, lagging behind in skill but trying to overcome that with pure power, though with intelligence behind it.

Broly - Pure power that is so far beyond what most people could ever create, he is kinda the counter to Gohan; what if that power came with no intelligence to control himself in using it.

Die-hard Oakland A's fan --- Keep the A's in Oakland!
Buu saga should have had no Goku until the very end. He gets special permission whoever rules the universe / multi-verse. He comes down and helps mystic Gohan and all the z-fighters. He goes SSJ3 for the end group kame hame ha which pisses off Vegeta who gets a rage boost and Vegetable in some peoples mind gets credit for the win. Have a credible 3 way argument who is strongest end of series.

And to achieve this, Gohan has been sneaking out every night or morning or whatever to train martial arts with Picollo.

Also something I didn't understand about the Buu is why were they hiding their power levels at the Tournament, that irked me.

Wish Gohan was planned as a smart fighter. An example I can think of is a boxer from Hajime Ippo who is also a medical student and he uses his medical knowledge to give him an advantage in his matches.

The whole Buu saga is just very convoluted and feels like it has no direction

It really makes no sense why they even bother trying to hide their power levels at all. They didn't care about that shit in Dragon Ball.

Goku should have gone SS3 at the start and killed Dabura and Babidi and been done with it.
Cell Saga SSJ2 Gohan will forever be one of my top 3 favorite DB characters

Gohan was not Alpha enough
So it became terrible after a few hundred episodes?
Irregardless, for all intensive purposes, I could care less.

Don't let this distract you from the fact that the post-ToP anime arc will feature Goten and Trunks as MC and NOT Gohan...lol
Isn't it the post-Granolah arc?
