Think of it the way that Indians think of it: you probably were. "Curry" just refers to "spiced" so almost everything is actually a type of curry. It's more of a foreigner thing to attribute "in a sauce" with "curry."
True, I wonder if how common authentic Indian food even is in Japan. Japanese curry is v mild and sweet and I dont think there's a whole lot of variation to it (I like it tho)
