Take out from a sit down place? 15-20 minutes. Take out from fast food? Until they physically lock you out
If it was about babies we'd have universal maternal care. There would be no charge no matter how complex the delivery. But its not about babies, is it?

Cheap Chinese places are like 20 to 30 minutes before close imo

Got back home with the food. Checked it before I left. They didn't give me the normal about of tso and only one fortune cookie instead of the usual two. I didn't bother to bring it up. I think my tip conveyed my displeasure.

Its not so much a specific time thing. Its more so, unless your resturants business is booming, typically resturants can be pretty dead the last hour they are open. All the employees want to go home. And then someone calls in the last 10 minutes. Well his pizza pie is going to take 20 minutes keeping a lot of people there 10 minutes past and then they arent even able to begin clean up til afterwards. The dishwasher cant get the stuff they need to clean. Now they got to wait to mop the floor. If they got a sandwich or pasta with that, now the kitchen guy has to dirty up the flat top again, and get more stuff dirty.

TLDR;
One persons last minute order keeps everyone there longer and until the food is finished and can hold off cleanup.

Food ended up being good after putting extra soy sauce on the dry ass rice. Shame they didn't give me the usual amount so I could have leftovers. Oh well.

I don't understand this nonsense of "zomg its too close to closing time." You're open until X o'clock, you damn well better have full service if I walk in 5 minutes before X.

A bank will sit and finish your loan application if you walk in at 4:55 pm.
A car dealer will happily do paperwork all night if you're there at 8:57 pm with money to buy the car.

I don't get this crap about how oh poor oppressed wait staff can't be scheduled to work until an hour after close.

I just call and ask. Small town, some places close early if business is slow, some stay open later for the same reason. Generally I'll just see if they are still taking orders or not.

I worked at a country club as a sous chef out of high school. Granted this was about 15 years ago, but from what I recall we were told to cook up to closing time. If a member waddled in at 8:59 and we closed at 9:00, we'd tell them they couldn't eat for the day. If a member waddled in at 8:45 and ordered 8:59, we were making their order whether we wanted to or not.

When the lady that answers the phone straight up tell you that they aren't cooking new food but you can get whatever general tso's chicken is on the bar to fill out the general tso chicken combination tray.

(No bullshit my brother actually got hit with this like last month, lol. It was like a hour before closing time still).

Yeah that's why I said they should close earlier and the employees are expected to stay a half hour longer or whatever to clean up if it's that big of an issue. But I've never done fast food, just my suggestion.

Because the people who set the hours and make the most money from getting a last-minute order, and the people who have to cook the food and then stay late doing the closing work, are not the same people.

30 mins is absolutely not too close for a low-mid tier chinese place. Call at 830, order takes 20-25 mins (TOPS), and you're in and out before close.

There is a courtesy when you get into that 15 minute range for sure though. But 30 mins is fine.

However, agree with what another poster said about "if your sign says close at 9pm and you tell me you'll take my order at 8:59, then shame on you for being pissed because you took my order." Yes it's a dick move to order at 859 but you're still technically in the right if the restaurant accepts your order.

AND, I agree with the other poster who said it could all be resolved if restaurants just said up front that they stop taking orders at a certain time before closing.

The bank loan / car purchase comparison doesn't really jive with me though, we're talking about a massive loan or a five figure purchase vs. A $15 bowl of chicken and rice.
