Havent played a sports game since GameCube. Im a big NBA fan so was interested when 2k23 was free on PS Plus. Is it just me or is the game bad?
After the 130 GB download (lol wut) I booted it up and was overwhelmed by all the options. Theres a league, a GM league, a season league, a league where you get trading cards of players to power up, a story mode, exhibitions, a bunch of random shit like Michael Jordan challenges. Had no idea where to start. Every menu has tons of options and text about their games-as-service bullshit of the week. The graphics are also PS3-level. Character models legit look like early PS3 quality.
My most controversial criticism is that the core gameplay is bad. The moves list is way too long for a basketball game. Every little dribble move has its own input; every possible variation on laying up or shooting or passing the ball has its own input. And some are strangely hard to pull off. The instructions to dunk are hold R2 and press right stuck up while driving. I couldnt get it to work after 8 attempts. Everything is too laggy because the players have to go through their animations before responding to inputs. The game prioritizes realism over control response.
On the positive side, the seemingly countless hours of commentary on every player in the league and players from previous decades is really cool. And they had real NBA commentators do the voices!
