When I was 8 years old I played Chrono Trigger constantly. Like, over and over again until almost all my stats were maxed out at **. So that, I guess.

Paper Mario or Bug Fables
Have you tried thinking rationally?
Pokemon is usually the perfect starter but it seems like he might be able to handle something a bit more advanced. Octopath Traveler might be a good choice.

Literally came to recommend ffix and chrono trigger but clearly there's already classy taste in the topic.

Video Game IGN: Nyobe. Someone tell me I'm pretty; very often I don't feel pretty...
Chrono Trigger
Final Fantasy Mystic Quest (might get him good taste in music as a side effect, as its good SNES MIDI metal)
Final Fantasy IV Pixel Remaster
Final Fantasy V Pixel Remaster
Final Fantasy VI Pixel Remaster
Lufia 2
Super Mario RPG

I would say Dragon Quest V, but the amazing story will be more fulfilling when hes older.

Really appreciate this, as he plays piano and loves learning Mario and Zelda music. He recently had a piano recital where he played the mario theme and it was a big hit.

Pokemon Fire Red, or and hear me out here: Final Fantasy 4.

I've long since been a massive advocate of FF4 and think its the best teaching turn-based rpg in existence. It's a very basic story that's easy to follow, introduces the mechanics of nearly every turn-based rpg, and to top it all off has a brilliant soundtrack. The only real questionable dialogue is the well known "You Spoony Bard", but it really shouldn't matter that much.

After playing Final Fantasy 4, you'll know if they like turn-based rpgs or not.

9 is pretty much a disneyfied rpg. Roguish hero, princess, a grotesque villian, plot could be a disney movie plot

I think excepting certain cases. That's a game you'd enjoy more when you're a little older. Imo
Final Fantasy IV was the game that got me into RPGs when I was 9.

So long as he can follow with all of the reading, he should be fine with it.

Literally paper mario. I got my sibling who doesn't even play video games to play and love that game. It's a game each member of our family has played and loved.

And I'm assuming pokemon is off the table since red blue yellow are too old and dated now?
FFMQ 4 sure
