I've felt their recent releases to be more of the same thing in the last 10 or so years since Portnoy left.

Hopefully they include him in the creative process, because they really need it right now.

They absolutely have been. I've noticed a lot of repeated/similar riffs, solos, etc. on their newest stuff, and most of it really does feel like "been there, done that".

Yeah, I remember thinking that it was super random when it happened and feeling a bit embarrassed for him when A7x didn't bring him on full-time, as he had envisioned. It was pretty understandable why the rest of DT told him to fuck off when he tried to come back.

Imagine being in Dream Theater though.

The work to enjoyable music ratio is absolutely fucked. Busting your ass every night while having to hear "Pull Me Under" sounds like a nightmare.

I weigh them about equal.

I&W is a bit more melodic and feels more set int he 80s with airy sythns and the album has a better pacing overall with a good mix of slower relaxing songs and big proggy masterpieces. More evocative of YES and ELP balancing hooks with complexity.

Awake is more of a tour-de-force of prog metal with some really intricate pieces punctuated by a more thrashy, grindy, 90s rhythm and riff structure. Tapping a bit more into Pink Floyd for the slower more dream-like pieces like "Space Dye Vest".

That's my two minute review comparison!

A Dramatic Turn of Events is better to me than the string of albums before it honestly. For a long stretch after Scenes from a Memory they just kept putting out samey albums with one or two standout songs on them and just felt like they were puttering around and going through the motions

Which is why I can't imagine bringing Portnoy back is going to do much for them on a creative level
