nice! are you replacing meat with "fake meat" or with other protein sources, like beans, lentils, tofu, etc?

other bonuses include being healthier and having more money.

Eating less farmed meat, maybe. But I'm down for lab grown meat.

I'm curious to see what sort of environmental impact this will have once it scales.

i mean, yes, but I'm not sure what this has to do with the topic. we can all contribute without too much hassle by shifting our diets even just a little bit.

If I could eat anything Id be willing to cut down on meat but due to some health reasons I already cant eat gluten, dairy, or soy, among some other minor things so I actually have a meat heavy diet because its one of the few things I can eat and tolerate.

In fact as much as I like meat I get tired of having such a meat heavy diet, primarily just meat and veggies but I gotta do what I gotta do. I cant eliminate everything.

I haven't read the article, but I remember hearing about how the meat trade hurts the earth in multiple ways.

like, huge amounts of trees are cut down in the Amazon to make way for cow farms.

and all the extra cows means more methane.

how do you feel about beans (not soy) and lentils? rice + beans make a great meal. i have numerous lentil recipes too. i make a darn good lentil ragu.

whatever strikes my fancy a given week. its been beans and nuts so far

I will skip meat now and then.

But I cannot stand 'fake meat' substitutes like Qorn, or vegetables that pretend to be meat (vegetarian sausages etc). I'll have roasted cauliflower, or a casserole with lentils, or a pasta with a cheese sauce.

yup. not to mention all the agriculture that is produced just to feed livestock. it takes ~16 lbs of food to produce 1 lb of beef. and all of that food needs to be grown, harvested, processed and transported to the farms.

I have to almost entirely avoid rice and pasta. I can tolerate beans.

Yeah, people don't have to go full vegetarian. If you go meatless for a few meals a week that really adds up over the course of a year.

it's not my favorite and I only use it sparingly -- usually when im digging up an old recipe that I've enjoyed for a long time. it's also expensive. i very much prefer to get my protein from other sources.

I like meat too much I don't want to totally stop eating it

that said I have reduced my meat consumption some over the past few years and I'm pretty sure I already ate less meat than the average person (based on portion ratios/sizes in almost all recipes I find)

You're never ever fully dressed without a smile!
Just out of curiosity, there seems to be a case where the top 1% tend to make up the majority of the problems when it comes to these issues, where they expect us to make up for it so they can keep up their lifestyles.

Is meat-eating a part of this, or does the fact that eating is something we have to do make it where it's not really as disproportionate as other things are? Only reason I ask is I could see events for rich people having a large amount of wasted meat for no purpose than to flaunt food that people could never hope to actually eat.

I'm eating less meat for health reasons and that's it.

Instead of having us use crappy paper straws and telling us to eat less meat, how about corporations and rich billionaires get their shit together. A bunch of us recycling and going semi-vegan isn't gonna do shit to help the earth, what we need is policy reform and holding the big conglomerates accountable.

It's unfortunate how many people are so resistant to changing their diets even just a little bit to reduce meat consumption.

My wife and I regularly cook meals without meat - usually once or twice a week. I'm a fan of impossible brand - I'll get a package of the ground "meat" and make things I would normally make with ground beef, and it still tastes great. Stuffed bell peppers with impossible meat, tacos, I even did a meat (plant) a week or two ago. It's not that hard. I still eat meat regularly and I don't ever plan on fully giving it up, but it's not the end of the world to scale back a little bit.

Now, if people can't afford it or something, totally get it. I haven't done a cost comparison to know if it's super different in price or not.

Same, been trying to cook more with fish and chicken in addition to the impossible meat I use.

Shrimp has been my favorite protein for years so I try to get deals on the frozen stuff and cook them into fajitas or pasta dishes

I'm sure my local grocery stores throws away more unsold meat in a week than I would save in a lifetime of cutting back my own meat consumption.
