Best I can tell, sometime before memes really got going, but when media connectivity was starting to get there, there was one or more instance of people becoming aware of literal seal clubbing by illegal poachers, possibly with descriptions or a video indicating that it is brutal and fairly easy to do.

The term "seal clubbing" then getting co-opted by some game communities to describe unsporting behavior like going to low ranks to pick on new players and such.

Maybe someone else knows better/the actual reason.

Maybe different from what you're talking about, but around 2002-2005, when memes were becoming a more common term on the internet but still foreign to normies, seal clubbing was a fairly big meme. There were flash games and a few saturated images. Heck, I think Kingdom of Loathing has Seal Clubber as one of the main classes because of this meme.

didn't know baby seals sounded like that. Don't know what species of seal that is. Pretty sure it is found by where polar bears are found.
