The first one was the best. I didnt realize how little Marlon Brando is actually in the movie. I liked watching Michaels change.

2 was good but not as good as 1. I didnt really like the flashbacks mixing with the present. Also fuck Fredo.

3 was complete garbage. The incest storyline ruined everything. I was happy the daughter died because shes a sick freak.

Overall Id give 1 a 9/10, 2 an 8/10 and 3 a 2/10

What was the incest thing? 3 is garbage. I remember some helicopter wild action movie shit that didn't even fit with the tone of the franchise LMAO

Michaels daughter wanted to fuck her cousin. And when they first interact she says that she was his 8 year old girlfriend when he was 15 and he says he had a lot of 8 year old girlfriends

it's been a while, but iirc, they do end up smashing in pt. 3.

anyway, the first two are some of my favorite movies, and while I agree that the first one is better, I think that the flashback segments in the second were great.

also, Andy Garcia in pt. 3 was badass - "hey, Zaza *bang*"
Don't you agree, Zach?

It's still strange that Brando was given the Oscar for best leading actor while Pacino (and two others from the same movie) was nominated for best supporting actor. It really doesn't feel like Vito is the main character of the movie; Michael clearly is.

For the first movie, there's an entire debate over whether the title refers to Vito, or actually, to Michael.

For the second movie, there's a related debate over whether the Michael storyline, or the Vito flashback is better.

For the third.....there's not much debate. It's the weakest link. Coppola did do a re-edit though, and it is an improvement on the initial release, IMO.

She was also in The Godfather II as well!
Set to an adaptation of JS Bachs music.

I think the title could certainly refer to either and would never take a committed side there (though I think it actually does refer to Vito, especially when paired with the iconic logo of the hand pulling the puppet strings).

What blows my mind is that the Oscars people thought Vito was the main character. He has a very limited screentime and lines in the last 2 hours and 15 minutes of a 3 hour movie. It's like a less extreme example of someone arguing that Sauron is the main character of the LotR movies. Sure, his presence and influence constantly hang over everyone, but come on, it's not his story first.

I only watched the first 2 bc everyone told me to avoid 3. Both are excellent but 1 is peak filmmaking and honestly de niro was overrated in 2. Didn't care much for the flashbacks.
Let's all please just get along.

I agree 100% with this, except I kind of believe it's really about Michael. Like you say though, strong arguments both ways.

What I can't understand is that, if it's really about Michael (IMO), why do I prefer the Vito flashbacks in G2? I haven't figured that one out yet, despite dozens of rewatches.

But Vito does absolutely disappear in the last couple hours of the movie.

The absence of Robert Duvall really hurt Part III. I don't remember the specifics of why he wasn't there, but I know it involved some kind of pay dispute.

Yeah, he wanted more money than the studio wanted to pay.

3 has some interesting ideas like Micheal trying to go legit through The Vatican and the whole conspiracy of the death of the Pope. I also like Connie's transformation from spoiled brat to a scheming gangster like her father and brothers. She is a Corleone too after all. Kinda foreshadowed in the first one. Sonny's illegitimate son joining the family is interesting as well. The execution of 3 was just really lacking.

The silent scream and ending were great. I've seen that the coda version cuts out the very end, which is baffling. The ending is perfect.

Originally before Robert Duvall was going to be in it, but the studio wouldn't pay him what he wanted and the movie was going to focus on Micheal and Tom's relationship deteriorating. Probably would have been a better story.

He was contracted with another studio and would have cost way too much to get him out of his contract.

Which sucks because a power struggle between Tom Hagen and Michael was apparentlybwhat Part 3 was going to be about.

Well, we are both wrong.
I forgot that scene was in GFI for some reason, I was thinking it was the second.
But apparently, she wasn't in The 2nd.

I watched godfather 3 as a teen and liked Sofia Coppola and that whole storyline <__< ...

Maybe watch the director's cut version of the movie tc, godfather coda, maybe you'll like it more who knows. It's still not the original idea of having Michael square off against Tom (which I don't see how could make sense either) but it's something I guess.

There have been instances of Italians/Italian Americans marrying cousins, even in the real life mafia. Carlo Gambino married his cousin so he and his number 2 and future boss Paul Castellano were both cousins and brothers in law. Rudy Giuliani married a cousin too.

Regardless, it's such a bad idea for a movie. Maybe if the writing was better and if the chemistry between Vincent and Mary was there, it could work as a forbidden love kind of thing even if it's eww, but Sofia Coppola didn't help with that. Don't know why FFC was all:

The scene where he confesses is phenomenal. 3 might be not great overall, but it has some bright spots.

If you are confused by this then you are either from Alabama or you are trolling.

Cousins means a sister or brother of one parents having a child.

Sonny is Mikes older brother whos son is Vincent. Mikes the younger brother with the daughter Mary. The two of them banging is disgusting by most peoples standards and rightfully so, incest is disgusing.

Yeah, I think some people are too quick to write the movie off. Yes, there's some notably weak acting, and not just Coppola, IMO. There's also some interesting resolutions to major plot threads:

  • Reconciles with Kay
  • Confesses his sins (reconciles with God?)
  • Settles all family business
  • Names a successor
And although he dies peacefully, the "business he chose" (line from G2) cost him every woman - after his mother - that he ever loved. Even Connie became a monster.

There's an extra disc that comes with the boxed set and on it, it shows Coppola and the writers deciding Michael's motivations from G2. Puzo never really got into that part in the novel. Very interesting if you ever get a chance. Those discussions were the basis for the Michael we see in G3.

Also, as an aside, those plot discussions were how Coppola got the idea to start up a winery/BnB up in Napa Valley. They apparently enjoyed gathering for the discussion sessions very much.

There are quite a few countries that actually culturally embrace cousins marrying. It seems to be less stigmatised outside of the UK.

Also, for some reason I like Vincent's "Zaza!" after he kills him. It's one of those things that has stuck in my brain for years. Sadly, another thing that has stayed in my brain is "MY LUCKY COAT!". That whole scene was straight out of some low budget mob movie. I get what they were going for showing how far things with the mob have gotten, but jeez how corny.

That's interesting. I have an old box set from the early-mid 00s (that I have to find) that has a disc of extras that I never watched for whatever reason. Would that be on that one as well or is this from a new set?

That sounds like the one.

EDIT: Whenever I corner a fly or something with a flyswatter, I yell "Zaza!" after the job is done. My lady's from Japan, and thought it was some obscure AAVE I was using. I wasn't even aware I had started saying it. Took her years to ask me WTF it meant. Still cracks me up.
