After years of being a fake Metroid fan like 99% of every other Metroid fan, I actually took the time and beat 4 Metroid games in the last couple of weeks.

Originally, I beat Metroid OG, Zero Mission, and 2 OG, but never had beaten Super. Well, as mentioned, tore through Super Metroid, Other M, 2 Remake, and just now, Fusion. All that we have left is Dread and that will be the last of the main team lineage.

Of course, there are the Prime games, which I have played 1 and 3, but never beaten either, so that is something in the future to look forward to. I have Prime on the GCN, Wii U, and the Switch now, so I just keep collecting versions without beating them, lol. At this point, though, I'm sorta waiting to see if Nintendo will release a MP2 and 3 remastered since MPRemastered looks really well done.

Looking forward to playing Dread, though. Got it the year it came out, and haven't even taken off the plastic.

At least you can finish on a good one after suffering through Other M.
A garbage pod!? It's a smegging garbage pod!
Tbh, I had fun playing Other M. Story had some weird moments, and after playing Fusion, I really feel like they basically just redid Fusion's story in too many ways as well, but whatever. I wouldn't mind another 3rd person 3D Metroid game, but one that has a little bit more freedom as a whole.

The OG Metroid is by far the worst to me.

Other M character assassinates Samus and makes her a fucking idiot, its writing is abysmal.

If you have a PC, check out Another Metroid II Remake if you're hungry for more. It's arguably a better remake than even the official one despite being a fangame made by one person
Fan of metal? Don't mind covers? Check out my youtube and give me some feedback

What do you mean by fake Metroid fan?
Three rings for the Elven-kings under the sky, seven for the Dwarf-lords in their halls of stone, nine for mortal men doomed to die

Yeah, it wasn't the best in that regard. Ridley scene was my personal least favorite part, even if the fight was cool. I felt the gameplay wasn't too bad, and Metroid games were already pretty linear during this era anyways. Wii remote stuff was jank, so missiles were annoying, but I'd like to think that could be done better today. An actual Metroid that works like a Metroid closer to Super but is 3D 3rd-person is something I still think would be really fun.

Yeah, I still have the zip somewhere I believe on my computer for that game. It's basically become almost a part of the main series with all of the talk for it despite not being official. I might play it one day, if I'm feeling the itch to take out all Metroids again.

Metroid "fan" that doesn't actually play the games.

Yeah Other Ms gameplay had a lot of potential despite Samus literally being willing to let herself cook to death at one point.

Just finished Dread, and oh my god, how did this not beat It Takes Two for GotY a couple years back? What an awesome game. I think it was my favorite one, have to process, but man, I feel like they took the criticisms of Other M to heart and tried to do right. I'll take angry Samus over "NO, NOT RIDLEY" Samus any day of the week. What a cool ending sequence, and the overall game was just fun too.

Can't believe I beat it in one day, but I just couldn't put it down.

Back of the napkin ranking time: Dread > Zero Mission > Super Metroid > 2 OG > 2 Remake > Fusion > Other M > Metroid OG

Won't do it now, but I can see myself doing hard mode at some point, and then Dread mode at an even later point.

After sleeping, I think one thing I really liked about Dread is that, it too, was pretty linear (in reality, all Metroid games are "linear" with the ability to open it up if you are creative with the power-ups (sequence-breaking) of which I'm not, lol), but it wasn't in your face about it. The game subtly led you to where you needed to go, but always let you actually get there without being in your face about it, making you feel like you solved the next steps. Previous Metroid games, starting with Fusion, always told you where you needed to go and how to do it, so that was nice.

I also liked that they brought back the interconnected nature of the world that has been lost since Super Metroid arguably (not counting remakes). Super would require you to backtrack all throughout the world to continue on. Fusion somewhat had that, but it was in "levels" where the game basically told you where to go as mentioned (and Other M took that to an even more extreme degree). I even felt like 2 Remake was more linear/railroady than the og 2. Dread brought back the idea that you may have to return several times to the same area in order to advance as you won't have everything you need in that area.

I feel like games past Metroid made the metroidvania part specifically about power-ups rather than plot progression where the only incentive to go back was more missiles/energy. I like that Dread brought back what made the Metroid in Metroidvania so special.

Dread right now has the top spot. I still have Prime 1, 2, 3, Pinball, Prime Hunters, and Fed Forces (I hear it got a bad rep and is better than people might think) and while I doubt the latter 3 will take it, curious if any of the trilogy will step up.
