The entire Blaster Master (NES) soundtrack is excellent, but as far as hard hitting I have to single out the stage 7 music. It hits so hard. There is just something so sentimental to me about music from the NES era. I often like it better than modern orchestral soundtracks.

I hope someone actually listens to this and it just doesn't get lost in a sea of recommendations that no one pays attention to.

For what its worth I actually do try to click on everyone's recommendations in these kind of topics. Sometimes it may take me a day or 2 to get through them all, but I will eventually.

I think for a lot of us that played the NES back in the day we tend to remember most recommendations already. Like I loved blaster master myself so I def. remember that game's soundtrack...its pretty awesome.

I didn't hear the boss theme from that widget game before so that one was pretty cool. My first time hearing that overlord title theme and the bass is freaking nuts.

I also do try to listen to everything in these topics. And happy Overlord got noticed! I always try to post it in these as I was surprised how hard it hit the first time I heard it.

Its the only track in the game, and although I own it Im sure the one and only time I played it was to just quickly test it after picking it up from FuncoLand or something decades ago. I likely just plowed through the title screen and didnt really appreciate it back then as teenage me.

Its also cool that the composer himself comments back to folks on YT. Jeroen Tel seems like a cool chap for sure, and he has made several other bangers, and definitely doesn't get the same recognition and attention as Follin and others.

I honestly think most of the stage themes for Mega Man 1-4 could be nominated. The series is incredible for its music, let alone the games. Just two quick examples of themes that go hard (yeah yeah, the first one is used ad nauseam, but its a masterpiece):

Very good choices in this thread! The NES may very well have the library with figs most high quality memorable tracks! All of it has stayed with us our whole lives! I would say Capcom, Konami, Sunsoft, Tecmo somewhat and Nintendo pushed the sound capabilities of that system to their upper limits, in some cases way beyond. A lot of Konami and Sunsofts stuff was pretty much early 16 bit games running on 8 bit hardware. I still dont know how they pulled that sorcery off!
As far as random one-off songs go, I always thought the title screen for pictionary was sort of insane
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SJwh3erQlyE

In terms of overall soundtracks I'm partial to the NES release of maniac mansion. it's a point and click adventure where you control a variety of characters and they each have their own bgm theme, they suit each character well and a lot of them are bangers

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ttGETmXm2Ao (edison family, the bad guys, aliens and weird tentacle monsters)

Also sort of departing from how many of the songs in this topic are just things that go totally insane, but I am to this day impressed by the original rendition of the final fantasy theme. it's amazing how they managed to put so much emotion into such a catchy and coherent melody and countermelody despite being extremely limited by the tech of the time

(My favorite NES RPG. This is the one that got me hooked on my life-long love for the genre).

Magic of scheherazade had 2 different gameplay styles. It has the zelda 1 style top down perspective and this always played when there was enemies on the screen:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=COvMSuEVe2M&list=PLud0sOqGLoS5OUvmHIklQO5DduZXuRHfd&index=10

World boss theme. This one had a ton of bass when played using a good ol' 90s stereo system. Some of them bosses creeped me out as a kid because of this music combined with the way some of them looked, lol.
