Lost my save, so I'm starting fresh.

As pretty much a newcomer, what do we recommend as a starting weapon?

I did ignore the super armour that they gave me at the start, switched off it to leather armour.

Switchaxe is easy. Chargeblade is the hard one.

If you want an easy weapon go with hammer or lance.

World was my only monster hunter experience. I rolled with longsword and enjoyed it

Ever played Greatsword? I just did a playthrough with it and it was a blast. Those big hits are so satisfying to land.

If you try it, make sure you learn tackle early on for super armor and a shortcut into True Charge Slash and slinger burst into True Charge Slash. Two of the best tools.

nah when i played years ago i mostly got carried through things by a friend who's godly at MH.

unfortunately there was some drama (i don't actually know what happened, it was unrelated to me afaik) and they cut off everyone from the friend group.

i think i was using gunlance back then

Consider switching to bow. You can dodge while charging your shot and it actually grants you a bonus charge, so you're heavily incentivized to stay at midrange and dodge as much as you want. Plus if you're solo at lower HR the bow's rock-rain thing does some stun damage.

But i might dip more into this again before the weekend.

Very much different experiences. World is more realistic, to describe it one way, with a focus on graphics, the environment and how to interact with it.

Rise is more of an arcade type experience, with the focus more being on getting to the monster asap and with a much more frenetic pace.

I VASTLY prefer Risebreak to Worldborne, but that isn't a common opinion.

i like rise but i'm stuck on the switch ecosystem with it b/c no crossplay

i plan on hitting world hard once my 3080 shows up monday probably

unless i get distracted by hitman

Do you have Iceborne as well? Iceborne adds a lot of moves to the weapons that you can't actually use if you don't have the expansion.

I beat the base game about 3 weeks ago, and have been taking a bit of break before doing the final challenges and moving on to Iceborne. I've used Switchaxe, SnS, and Hunting Horn. All very fun weapons. Switchaxe is my main though.

Rise was my first game. I like the aesthetic in World significantly more. I think it ultimately just looks, sounds, and feels better because it was designed for real consoles while Rise was designed for the Switch first and foremost.

I also like the Switchaxe (my main weapon) more in World than Rise, which is a rather unpopular opinion. Rise's Switchaxe is of course great, but I think the emphasis on Rapid Morph somewhat ruins what I want out of the weapon. It's supposed to be a weapon where both its modes are viable and used frequently, and I get that feeling more in World than in Rise.

Diablos is a bullshit monster and can rot in hell. Enemies that hide underground and then pop up directly under you without any real telegraphing are stupid bullshit and never fun in any game ever. It also just has too much range with its swinging attacks. I always switch to lance or gunlance for diablos in World. Just shield and wait for it to pop up out of the ground or stop charging and swinging its dumb tail around, then finally fight back.
Hambo's alt.
The current hotness for World is the ICE mod I believe. I don't know if you need Iceborne for it but I know it overhauls a bunch of stuff. I think it got full release a few months back and I know a bunch of people went back to World when it did.

I did two playthroughs in World, one with HBG and one with lance. The changes to lance in World actually cemented it as one of my favorite weapons now. It makes Diablos a joke.

If you think Diablos is bad now, you're in for some pain in High Rank.

Personally, I love Diablos. One of my favorite monsters in the series, though admittedly World Diablos is kind of boring in comparison to Rise Diablos. I love how massive and aggressive it is. It's the kind of monster that made me interested in Monster Hunter in the first place. Just something huge and dangerous that is really satisfying to whack around with a really big stick.

Anyway, bring screamer pods to deal with it when it goes underground. Works great at interrupting its digging. And you can even bring screamer sacs to craft more pods mid-fight.
