Hey now.
Genesis was always held back by its controller design imo. Not sure who thought three huge buttons in a straight line made sense.

honestly, once i figures out you were supposed to hold the center stick of the 64 controller it wasnt so bad, just the fact those joysticks are notorious for being dogshit

Both trash, tbh. Some of the worst controllers made. Guess I'll give it to the N64 since the main buttons are in a better position.

It's AWESOME for it's era.

The N64 controller wasn't even the best controller of it's era.

I literally own the Retro-Bit Sega Genesis BIG 6 controller.

It's super comfy & ergonomic as heck.

I'm glad Retro-Bit made a updated improvement to the original design.

Not really a huge fan of either design tbh, but I'd probably go with Nintendo if I had to pick one. More buttons, and an analog stick.

My ideal controller would have the overall shape, grip, etc of an Xbox controller, but with Sony's dpad/stick layout.

So you're basically talking about the Dual Sense Controller

Genesis six button is superior.

Also lol at everyone hating the three button more than the n64 one. The retro community agrees that the Genesis controllers have the best d-pad.

N64 is the worst controller ever created and if I could wave a magic wand and erase them all from existence, I would.

I always liked the N64 controller. Far from perfect, but I liked it.

The Genesis controller bugged me. It was just way too big for what all it provided (3 buttons). And now that I think about it, I also didnt care for the Master System controller and the Dreamcast controller. Not sure if I ever used the Saturn controller.

I had a Genesis as a kid, so I was used to it and never had issues with it.

I tried to play the N64 as a an older teen or in my early 20s at a friends and I hated every moment of trying to use that controller.
n64 controller sucks at least genesis doesnt break

Genesis by virtue of being a regular fucking controller
I don't believe in belts. There should be no ranking system for toughness.
Genesis. I had fun with the N64 but let's face it. That controller design was just...just awful.

I see the intent/decisiveness of the N64 controller, not so much the Genesis.

Worst of major manufacturer first party controllers... let's make sure to specify...because I'll take that shitty Sega Boomerang over a Mad Catz special lol

But seriously - yes I agree... both terrible controllers for very different and also a few similar reasons. I really hate the N64 controller since I haven't much nostalgia for it. I went through that gen with PS1 so I couldn't "get used to it".

N64 and Genesis have opposite problems.

The N64 stick sucked, but it's c-button set up was novel and still hard to replicate. The next best option is either keyboard or mapping c-buttons to X/Y/L/R.

The Genesis has a fantastic d-pad, but has issues when you want to either hit buttons precisely or hit multiple buttons at once. You can piano, but that's awkward. Really isn't that much of an issue considering its library, but wouldn't hold up now. 6-button fixes many issues, but still rough to reach from A to C.

I'd give the Genesis the edge since it doesn't have mechanical problems.

The one that has a Z BUTTON

It honestly kinda reminds me of Wild Wacky Action Bike but I love the N64 controller

The classic Genesis 3-button was designed for teenage to adult hands, especially compared to the boxy NES controller that was targeting kids hands.

Yeah I wound up getting this controller and thought it handled and felt great, it was real durable also.

They had to go through "Sega Approval", so you know they weren't going to allow one of their licensee's release a substandard controller, they have a reputation to maintain.

My only complaint is that the start button isn't a circular button in the center like later Sega Controllers, but that's me looking at future Sega Controller designs and wishing some of their features were ported backwards.

It's odd to me how close this is. Great topic i wouldn't even consider
