The rifle is also the most boring weapon in the game so skip it.

I only really did the plasma cutter in the original. You can cut all of the monster dicks off super easy with it
I don't believe in belts. There should be no ranking system for toughness.

Definitely the Plasma Cutter.

As others have said, you can use it for the entire game if you want. There's even a Trophy/Achievement for doing so.
