Imagine the kid who leveled up his Kadabra all the way to Level 100, and couldn't figure out why it never evolved into an Alakazam. None of the Stones worked, either.

my cousin just rented a gameboy and a spare game from the store to do these evolutions. it was very clever by his parents, since he didn't have a sibling near the same age that had their own gameboy.

Back then = Alakazam
Now = Gengar

Also, nowadays you can use a variation of the Mew Glitch to catch the fully evolved forms in the wild. We didn't know about that back in the 90's though.

currently Machamp but all of them except Golem have been my answer at some point

in using them in Gen 1 itself though, it's Zam for sure

Fun fact (which most people probably know about, but still): No NPC trainer in any of the Gen 1 games ever used Golem on their team. Meaning that--taking into account the other choices between Pokemon players made (starters, the Hitmons, the Fossils, the Eeveelutions)--it's the only Pokemon that you are guaranteed to never see unless you got one yourself.

They could have at least replaced the second Onix on Bruno's team with a Golem.

Alakazam was so unnecessary, Kadabra already fucked up everything

I think Machamp was the most extra bang for buck
