They locked the guy out of the deli and then once they thought he was gone, they unlocked the doors so they could go home. I don't they were expecting the guy to ambush them as soon as the doors opened.

I absolutely believe that if you interject in a situation like this you have to be prepared to defend yourself and to be willing to do violence to do so. If you aren't prepared to do so then you are likely to get hurt or killed. I was only speaking for myself when I was responding to him, not anyone else.
