I camp and hike, so I can kinda understand that comparison. I was surrounded by physically and verbally abusive meatheads and/or idiots all of my young life who called anything that wasnt extremely masculine gay. Then I traveled the U.S. and met people from all walks. I just feel more comfortable around people who know what that feels like, even though Im straight.
Oh, that makes it a lot easier to understand. I came from a rough neighborhood, it took a while to transition from "watch your back" to "chill the fuck out jesus", but it was a lot less stressful, eventually.
