There were a lot of stupid things said about COVID, but something about pretending "shot" hasn't been shorthand for "vaccine" forever still sticks with me today.

Who even coined that line? Someone clearly started it because all the free-thinking anti-vaxxers were restating it verbatim.

These are largely the same people who hate Obamacare but love the ACA, and can only decide on whether or not they agree with a literal actual Hitler quote if they think it came from Trump or Hitler.
Look, I can name a few instances in MY life where I tried to reach mutual understanding

I never heard that specific line, but have heard the "it's not a vaccine" part.

They're trying to sway middle ground people into being anti vax, by making it not sound like medicine, but violent.

Many also insist on calling it a jab, oddly, all the time. For the same reason.

What I gathered from people IRL who I encountered saying this is that they believed that Big Pharma was marketing it as a "shot" because they knew it didn't work like a "vaccine"

When you tell them it literally says "COVID-19 Vaccine" on the box and that everyone regularly calls repeat vaccine doses "booster shots"? Silence and some awkward change of subject/argument.
