Margins do matter because they send clear messages. A politician that narrowly wins behaves very much differently than with a huge margin, especially if they aren't term-limited and want to keep running.

Trump losing the popular vote by even bigger margin for the 3rd straight election will also send a clear message - and perhaps fast track the downfall of the Republican party (already spiraling out of control).
