I'd say the odds are slightly higher than you ever posting something that isn't stupid as hell.
I mean they aren't the same size, but there is something weird where the Sun is 400 times farther from us than the Moon, and the Sun is 400 times larger than the Moon so they can perfectly align like that.

The moon wasn't always at that distance and will not be at that distance in the future. We just happen to exist in the few million year period where they match up.
So what you're trying to say is if you stand in front of the Empire State Building and put your thumb over your eye it's God's magic dumb bullshit? If the moon was smaller, we would never get a full eclipse.

All according to God's planGod's plan to...give us a cool looking light show? Damage a bunch of people's eyes? Freak a bunch of people out?
God's plan to...give us a cool looking light show? Damage a bunch of people's eyes? Freak a bunch of people out?God works in mysterious ways!
I don't really get what people who say this think the point behind it is supposed to be
The moon wasn't always at that distance and will not be at that distance in the future. We just happen to exist in the few million year period where they match up.Troll topic aside, this is the interesting part. We happen to not only live in a unique time period and circumstance, but also be aware that we live in it. We may be the only planet in the universe that experiences total solar eclipses in this way, and we kinda take it for granted (like everything else)
There are hundreds of billions of galaxies in our observable universe. The likelihood of us experiencing anything uniquely is pretty slim. This is just an assumption, however. There's no real evidence for it from what I know.
No evidence of what? That our galaxy is the only one
No evidence of what?Anything. Intelligent life outside of this planet, much less any life. Solar eclipses experienced in this way. etc
there is something weird where the Sun is 400 times farther from us than the Moon, and the Sun is 400 times larger than the Moon so they can perfectly align like that.
yea, this!! That's what I meant. :)It's not really all that weird.
Another perspective of this is that Saturn has 146 moons. There are times when their orbits are just right that they can have "daily" solar eclipses.I think there's something to be said for the eclipses here just barely working. like, the moon covers the sun so perfectly cleanly. saturn the moons are way bigger in comparison to the sun so it's less of a dramatic thing
We happen to not only live in a unique time period and circumstance, but also be aware that we live in it.I dunno if you've ever heard of this but you reminded me of this school of thought: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anthropic_principle
Proponents of the anthropic principle argue that it explains why the universe has the age and the fundamental physical constants necessary to accommodate conscious life, since if either had been different, no one would have been around to make observations. Anthropic reasoning is often used to deal with the idea that the universe seems to be finely tuned for the existence of life.
It's about orbit and distance.it's about orbit, distance, size of moon and distance from sun. basically just a lot of parameters that have to come together in the right way. I'm not intending to argue it was all "set up" by some higher power or anything since I don't believe that either. But I think the people saying stuff like how it's just the same as you blocking out buildings with your thumbs are simplifying to a level they are missing the point. It's a rare coincidence that makes something truly amazing to look at and everyone should appreciate how cool the natural world can be
lol, no

Plus this topic is silly and unnecessary. True believers know that God exists because bananas fit perfectly in our hands. How else can you explain a banana perfectly fitting in your hand if not for the will of God?

lol, noBecause the modem banana wasnt made by god. Its a hybridized monster of a plant that doesnt even function as a fruit because the banana itself doesnt have any seeds. Its less natural then Frankensteins monster.

Coincidences happen all the time.
All according to God's plan
Always the same excuse, "God's plan".
It was God's plan to give 4 year old's bone cancer? 6 month old babies brain cancer?
That is proof there is no God. Fuck... You try to claim God is real because of yearly eclipses (THEY HAPPEN ALL THE TIME), but just ignore babies and toddlers having lethal cancers.
I think there's something to be said for the eclipses here just barely working. like, the moon covers the sun so perfectly cleanly. saturn the moons are way bigger in comparison to the sun so it's less of a dramatic thingExactly. For all we know, we're the only planet in the universe this happens to from an observable standpoint. Sure, the universe is big and it could happen quite often. But I also like to think in spite of it, other planets do have unique and odd occurrences if you were to be on it as an observer. Nothing wrong with unique circumstance.
