I used to think Commander was dumb, but playing with the pre-cons is pretty fun. It was also a fun way to get my girlfriend at the time to play with us because if we just played one on one I'd destroy her every time.

fuck if i'm gonna play an 8 player chaos (free for all) game and NOT try to win lol
I think the main problem is that playing to win in commander basically always means some sort of infinite combo kill everyone at once deck. nothing else really works, for two reasons:
1) there's 3 other players (or even more) instead of just 1 and they all start with extra life, so actual normal combat takes forever to get anywhere
2) if you appear to be too far ahead, you get blasted out of existence

which basically means the goal in commander is to look like you are doing nothing until suddenly you oneshot every other player simultaneously with no warning

I sincerely could never get the hang of that game. Yugioh is more my speed.

I don't understand Yugioh at all and I find magic to he super straightforward.

IDK, I legitimately don't think I would be able to explain the rules of Magic with anyone. I guess it wouldn't be so hard if it was just one set that I had to explain, but even then, I don't think I could. That's more on me not being able to explain myself clearly when I'm talking to people, but there is a LOT when it comes to Magic. Mana, Instants vs Sorcery, summoning sickness vs Haste, all that sort of stuff would be pretty easy to explain. It would be the stack order I would struggle with. When this happens, that happens, which makes you have to do this, and since you did that you have to do this. . . and have them look at me like I'm cheating the new player.

Generally what I do is start with a mono green deck vs a mono white deck to teach the basics, then I introduce a mono black deck to start to introduce some sac themes, then mono red to introduce instants and burn, then mono blue to really ramp up the stack and interacting with it.

Then once the person I'm teaching has those basics down, I introduce the more complex concepts.

Yeah, that's a great way to do it

I know that the really good ones can turn a game into just "destroying/defending the planeswalker" but generally the thing I like about Planeswalkers is that they're easier to interact with than e.g. enchantments or non-creature artifacts.

Though I am ready for Wandering Emperor to be out of Standard. There are a lot of comparisons made between her and Settle the Wreckage but from a "game design" perspective I find Settle the Wreckage to be much better.

Like, I don't mind dealing with one of them. But some players play like two-three of them and it's just too much reading for me. I'm more salty about that it's usually people with 200 card decks and they get every f'n draw they need and 2-3 PW to back them up

I like how they're incremental value while you try to defend them, but I'm not too big a fan of when they are particularly effective at defending themselves. too much of a one-man-army sort of feel

Considering when I played it. I wasnt on the ground floor. Not the first edition but a few after it. When ever IA came out. Collected for awhile just incase things didn't work out. So planewalkers I'm aware of just not really sure what it means. I played the video games but don't really understand it all really. I just played the matches and collected the cards
I was born when she kissed me. I died when she left me. I lived a few weeks while she loved me-
I also hate planeswalkers. It's less annoying nowadays, cuz there are ways to deal with them, but when they were first released, it SUUUUCKED

tbh, I'd be fine if they never printed another one, but I'm not really even a target for the game anymore, so

I think commander is fun if the group is on the same page. People need to be playing decks of a similar power level to have fun.

I *really* want timeless to work out as a real format, but WotC please you need to put Daze or Force of Will/Negation into the format or it will remain absolutely degenerate forever.

Too high of a power level to not have the safety valves real eternal formats have access to
