They aren't. Not even in the middle of nowhere. Between credit card and digital payment (especially PayPay), it is rare you find a place that is cash only.

Yep. I was there last year and even some street vendors had little handheld CC machines that printed receipts. That was shocking to me since I was expecting a little more rustic experience.
This is where cool people write stuff.

do you have to have that special scannable chip thing in your phone for this?

they've been adding phone payment like that to some things where I live but my phone is too old for it :|

No. NFC is only for using your phone as a replacement for an IC card. That's a different thing. For stuff like PayPay (AliPay works for this too if you're Chinese), LINEPay, WeChat, etc., you use QR codes. Any phone, tablet, etc. should work just fine as long as the screen isn't too dark.

Edit: Found a picture showing services you can use at any place that does PayPay.

yeah agreed, I'd even go as far and say anyone "visiting" is approaching zero chance of encountering a typical tourist spot that's cash-only.

Dont your debit or credit cards have that? Its more annoying than just needing your phone but at least you dont need cash.
