Ok, they were never the best. Most self-owned sandwhich shops were better. However, the veggies were fresh (i worked there when j was 19, the veggies are fresh, meat is frozen). They had some good bread, and good variety of toppings.

The 5-dollar footlong was amazing and you could get some good stuff with it.

The fact that a combo is like 3 times as much as it was, is sad. For what it was, Subway was pretty decent and was often the cheaper choice.

Most footlongs didnt go over 11 dollars around 2005-2010 iirc.

Their coupons got nerfed.

The 3 footlongs was basically a BOGO..

Subway used to be a decent chain all things considered. But over expansion ruined the product. Now Jersey Mike's, Firehouse and probably Jimmy John's are better.

Doesn't help that all stores here refuse coupons ( physical and through the app) so you can't even make it a deal

No matter what I get at Subway, it all tastes the same.

When you start your go to a local non-chain Sandwich shop that actually make all their ingredients that day it really puts into perspective how fucking terrible Subway is.
Sigs are for losers.
Now?

I heard that jimmy johns acquired subway.

Also, I still get coupons, but they are nerfed.

I eat there occasionally out of convenience bc they have a location in my office building but my 6 inch combo is $12 and isn't even filling

5$ foot long was an amazing deal in hindsight

you should always order a footlong because a 6 inch is 2/3 of the price. They always (or should) cut it in half.

I go to Capriotti's now. Blows Subway out of the water.

Ehh, pretty much the same as its always been as far as I can tell besides the price. but prices have gone up everywhere. Good bread with low quality meats and cheese. The produce has always been pretty hit or miss.

Jersey Mikes tuna sandwiches are godly compared to Subway.

Firehouse I've had once, it's not bad, better than Subway but I think Jersey Mike's is better.

But they do have varieties that JM doesn't so they're still worthwhile IMO.

Subway, last I had it I was paying $16 for a footlong and drink which is stupid. JM and FH are like $12-$13 for the same amount of food

I honestly always thought they were. We had a local place in my area called Sub City that makes amazing Jersey style subs with the vinegar and oil. Big ass subs, thick with meat, always freshly sliced right there as you order it, everything fresh. They were HUGE. I honestly could barely finish one and would often leave like 1/4th.

This was in the early 90s and I thought it all the way back then. I was shocked when I joined the Navy in 1994 and everyone was into Subway. Not only did they taste much worse than I was used to but they were like 1/3rd the size of what I was used to. They were baby subs. I won a bet in the Navy saying I could eat 3 of them no problem and I did.

That was the last time I ate Subway. That was like 1995. They were just too inferior for me to stomach. I didnt care about price. Id have paid 3 times as much to eat a Sub City sub over a Subway sub, but I didnt have to.

Me and a couple guys I knew were almost exclusively living off $5 footlongs early 2000s. It was cheap and decent enough, plus - if you were creative - there was a lot of variety.

Now the price is no bargain, and other places have (IMO) passed them in quality. Last I went there was ~2019, IIRC.

I don't mind Subway. I'll have it once or twice a month for lunch when I want to treat myself instead of bringing a lunch to work.

I'll admit the reason I go there is because it's the closest place to my work, but I still like it and think people's complaints about it are overblown.
Save for your doomed future
I still dont mind their basic ham on white. Goes down in a pinch

I don't know how they stay in business. In my town there's a small grocery store that'll make you a fat cold cut for less than $10. OR you can get a scrawny stale cold cut from Subway for over $10. To get the amount of meat the grocery store gives you'd have to triple it at Subway and spend $20.

Who the fuck is choosing Subway.
This is where cool people write stuff.

It should really be impossible to mess up but here we are.
There's a difference between canon and not-stupid.
I eat Subway's rather regularly. I haven't noticed much of a quality downturn in recent years.
However, when Quiznos was a thing, I chose it over Subway's every time. What a shame that Quiznos is no more. I loved that place.

Edit: I don't have a Firehouse Subs within order-able distance, so I can't judge them, but Jersey Mike's is the undisputed sub king, to me.
Only downside is that there isn't one near enough for me to walk to, at home or at work, so I always have to order if I want Jersey Mike's, which makes the meal substantially more expensive than Subway's which is in walking distance no matter where I am.
