and whatever operating system you use Steam on doesn't?
I mean if we're being honest, no one really protects data at all ever since the Internet just became an ad machine. But, the OS I use steam on I also don't have an account for and only use strictly for playing games and don't even bother to browse sites outside of this one and a couple other gaming info sites.

So ... Correct, for me it does not.

That said saying it like that is just a reason to have fewer accounts and limit your footprint in federal on my books.

Wall of text inc. TL;DR at the end.

PSN is available in 69 countries around the world.
(Source: https://www.playstation.com/country-selector/index.html)
right now there are (roughly) 190 independent countries in the world.
The whole of Africa, except for South Africa, Egypt and even european countries like Belarus don't have PSN.
But OP these are meanie states that don't have fair laws jadajada
The Baltics - states that are part of the european union - are also excluded.
These people can't create accounts.
If your country is not on the list, try to create an account in a supported region, but remember:
Sony has the right to ban you for false credentials. You'll need a VPN and must pay in the currency of the country you choose.
3.1. All information provided during Account creation, and during the use of your Account, must be accurate and complete. We reserve the right to suspend, terminate or restrict any Account (including as stated in Section 12.2 of this Agreement) that uses or was created using false information, or that we determine was created or used for a purpose that violates this Agreement.
3.2. During Account creation you must select the country or region of your residence and in which your account will be registered in. Once your account is created, you will not be able to change the country or region code associated with your account.
12.2. Suspension or Termination by SIE. With or without notice, we may restrict, suspend or terminate your PSN Account and PlayStation Device, or indefinitely restrict, suspend or discontinue your access to or, or use of, certain PSN Content, offerings, features, products and services, if you violate this Agreement or we have a reasonable belief such a violation has or will occur, or as otherwise may be reasonably necessary to protect our PSN users, our partners, our platform, or other SIE interests.
Maybe this helps you understand why some people are annoyed.
They will be locked out. Sony MUST find a solution for this and it can't be: Lie about your credentials and risk that we might ban your helldivers account.

TL;DR: PSN is not available world wide, not even in all countries of the EU. Sony has the right to ban everyone who uses wrong credentials

The rate things are going, Valve might have to issue another play time limit exemption on refunds. I looked today and a lot of the reviews that are bombing them are about getting a refund with 20 or more hours.

I refunded it 5 minutes shy of two hours, though realistically, the PSN account requirement was piss on the cow pie for me. Between an anti-cheat that is not very well regarded and having to start the game THREE FUCKING TIMES before it worked correctly, and then getting stuck in a hole. And then between the hole and an outer hole, with no way out, I was done. I'm honestly still pissed that it insisted on force choosing a microphone I had disabled and there's no way to change that without me having to waste time disabling the driver entirely rather than just telling Windows not to use it. There's some Windows fuckery involved in that too with mic passthrough that isn't Sony or Arrowhead's fault to be fair.

PSN is not up to par. Many players will need VPN and Sony can and lol will at some point ban them. My nephew got banned using a VPN in New York.
It's not the end of the world, but we can see it from here.

Sucks for the devs but Sony fucked up and this is the consequence.
Let's make biscuits!
Sony is legit the only company I know of that can see an out of nowhere runaway success, look at it in depth, and think "How can we ruin this for short term profit?"
I don't think this would of been as big an issue of they had made it really apparent about the eventuality of a PSN account.

The description is fine and all. But people don't expect that. Especially a third party account on a non MMO title.

You don't hand a product over to a consumer after they purchased it. And then a month later notify them that they will no longer be able to access the product unless that creat an account.

Very anti consumer. Especially if your already forking 40 dollars over.

The push back I've seen is that "they were notified"

Which sure, they were.

However if the barrier to the warning is a simple click without a subsequent warning (ever) then it's still a scumbag move

Can I get an explanation and source on how this might be illegal under EU?

Do you need to pay for PlayStations online services if youre on PC? Or does a free PSN account work fine for playing on PC? I dont play my PS5 online so just wondering if my base account might be enough if I go PC for this game.

You do not need to pay to play it online on PC. It's also what they're planning on doing with all future games coming to PC to allow achievements and stuff

For being against hyper-capitalistic corporate moves? It's always interesting seeing vocal leftists do a 180 on their values when it comes to a corporate that makes products they like/spite a demographic they dislike. If anything logically this would be something right wing Gamers would be defending but the stereotypical capital G Gamer hates everything so much that the roles have reversed.

Which on paper means it should be trivial for them to use this exact same system to allow both cross-play and cross save on all their titles. Which we know they won't.

Looks like Steam is issuing some refunds and not outright rejecting people yet.

Left should prefer worker (players) rights while the Right should prefer Corporate rights to fuck with the players.

So the 'Gamers' (on CE at least) who are left wing should be up in arms about Sony stomping on players, but apparently that's not the case and the leftists of CE are simping hard for Sony's decision.

I could see defending Sony if people had been illicitly avoiding the requirement and Sony was cracking down but the warning being what it was and a "click past and forget it" makes it feel like it wasn't a serious threat/warning.

It's especially scummy they sold the game to regions that they had to know wouldn't be able to get a PSN account. Unless they truly just make exceptions for those countries which proves the whole requirement is entirely arbitrary and has no basis in any safety or technology mandated reasoning

Won't speak for anyone else but for me it's less that I'm taking Sony's side and more shaking my head from how embarrassing other gamers are acting. Hits the front page of /r/all and it's all these people freaking out, people in this topic making references to comic books, all the review bombing and screams of "HOLD THE LINE FOR DEMOCRACY," etc.
It's not the first time a game has required you to sign up for their own service and it's not going to be the last. The way people are acting online it's like they think they're taking a hardline stance to prevent genocide instead of a company doing what companies always do.
It doesn't help that these fans are also spamming in other communities, mostly just copy and pasting large comments from other people. It's not "oh think of the poor billion dollar company" and more "these people are having meltdowns acting like children cause they were told they can only play with their new toy if they wash their hands first"

Except in this case some players aren't being provided the water to wash their hands and also the washing your hands is signing up for an unsecure service that is going to sell whatever data it can get on you.

To keep on with the metaphor, they're washing their hands and Sony is taking their dirt and DNA to sell to other people

Because making someone sign up for a service after purchase is scummy. Especially when it's insecure, and in some places that the game is available, you can't have PSN. This is not a false flag here. People SHOULD unite like this to get big corps to open their ears. Shame that they can't do this for other things, but I'll take what I can get.

This is a non issue for like 90% of people. For those in places where they cannot make an account, Sony needs to resolve that. But it's a non issue for almost everyone.
About 3 million of the Helldivers copies sold were sold in countries without PSN, China and the Philippines being big buyers, for example. So no, it's not 90%. A large chunk of the playerbase is losing access. I just played with 2 groups of Chinese players earlier this week. Those people will no longer be able to play...
