Wrath imo

yeah wrath and BC is second.

I voted dragonflight by accident because I thought I misclicked the first time

Vanilla was top tier. Tons of shit to do, raids for non max level players, 10 man mini raids in the 40's and 50's.

Tons of fun shit to do, tons of unique zones, tons of different things to do, and it was all vanilla.
lolAmerica
Mists through Legion is the best tbh in terms of how fun classes are to play

but the world of vanilla is still untouchable, just truly something special

so i dunno

Vanilla is the best iteration of the world and the game's concept. It has the most to explore, the best cohesion between zones, the most interesting locations and dungeons...

Subsequent versions were smaller in scope, more limited in their worldbuilding, and more streamlined in terms of exploration and progression. Vanilla truly felt like you were entering a world for the very first time as a fresh adventurer and everything that happened from there was up to you and where you chose to go next.

I disagree I started at the tail end of vanilla and prefer Wrath. It's the only time I gave a turd about the storyline.

TBC had that old school feel combined with mordern optimizations and quality of life improvements.

WotLK was just a massive upgrade but pretty toned down due to becoming more casual friendly.

Either could be considered the best.

Mists of Pandaria was peak WoW, but it never got a fair shake because of all that Kung-Fu Panda crying. It also introduced my favorite class, Monk.

Dragonflight gets an honorable mention for letting my favorite race (Worgen) be me my favorite class, but MoP is the GOAT.

Easily Vanilla, which truly felt like a WORLD of Warcraft instead of just a raid treadmill.
In terms of class fantasy? Legion was the fucking bomb to me. It felt like it had all led to this and you would get class armor and your weapon was this whole extra ability/passive tree. And the skins? Best time to be a Druid!

It just hasnt been the same since

WotLK, especially as a ret paladin

I really liked Legion. Battle for Azeroth killed my interest in the game since 2018 when it came out.

the correct answer is vanilla

wrath was fun, but it also started a lot of trends that ended up being very bad for the game

after playing SoD and then leveling in the new updated zones, holy crap does everything feel so much better. I don't want to go back to SoD. It takes too long to do anything. Say what you want about the epicness of the old world, all the difficulty in vanilla comes from things being inconvenient and time consuming.
RIP CE. This decision to close social boards will be the end of Gamefaqs.
I didn't actually play it, but going through MoP's zones and raids, learning the story, and reading about the class design, I still voted MoP.

Who's the fucking jabroni that voted WoD?

I tried Shadowlands recently, never played it at launch. My God was it boring. I think I managed to play about an hour or so before I bailed for a different timewalking expansion.

I actually quite liked the individual zones and their aesthetic and all that. The art department still knocks it out of the park every time.

But my god, the story was so bad. Bastion alone where you side with the totalitarian regime that demands you abandon all of your memories of your mortal life and experience total ego death versus the rebels that are trying to overthrow that system was just baffling.

And then there were just fundamental gameplay issues. Like traversing between each zone meant you had to take a flight path through Oribos, the most boring capital city in the entire game.

Vanilla, it had the best world. It felt most like an actual place. The game became more "theme park" like as time went on. Vanilla was also great because you weren't the "chosen one".

Vanilla, for all the reasons already mentioned.

Some can say it's just nostalgia but in my experience, when I revisit something that I think was good because of nostalgia but it wasn't actually good, I end up hating it.

Every time I've played through Vanilla WoW since they launched classic it's been just as fun as it was ~20 years ago.

not sure how much you've played the game, but this is a complaint i've heard a lot over the years and i think it really misses the point of what makes an MMO compelling

when the modern WoW developers sanded down all the rough edges from the leveling experience, it had a number of bad effects.

for example, removing group quests reduces cooperation and teamwork. that kind of thing reverberates to other aspects of the game, like bad vibes communicating across a tuning fork. if people don't have group quests, they never dip their toe into the social aspects of the game. they start playing the MMO as a single-player experience. then you get to the point where you can just hit a queue button and auto-find a group, which is even worse.

the cumulative effect of all these things eventually erodes away other really important aspects of the game. the health of guilds in modern retail is really, really bad, precisely because the game is too fucking convenient and there are no rough edges to incentivize guilding.

Yeah, one of the best things about Vanilla WoW is the community aspect of it.

You need to group up with people to finish some quests, not just in dungeons but out in the world. So you meet up with a random ragtag group of people all needing to finish the quest and you all chat for awhile while doing it. Then a couple days later you're chilling in Stormwind and someone from that group messages you to see if you want to join a dungeon run, and you meet a few more new people.

Your name and reputation matters in Vanilla. If you're friendly and a good player, or if you're just a dick, the whole server knows about it

The Hardcore servers make it even better, cause you'll be out questing and see the corpse of that really cool player you grouped with last week and actually feel sad that their character's gone lol

Pandaria, hands down. Love WotLK, had a blast in it. But Pandaria was just perfect.
Believe those who are seeking the truth; doubt those who find it.
Pandaria ruined the talent trees it's the only expansion I fully sat out

vanilla is unique because it's the only version of WoW where levelling was the bulk of the intended experience (and imo the only worthwhile thing about vanilla) which will always be special

every other version of WoW is about endgame with varying results

vanilla did have a much better community but the game itself wasn't as good as later versions. well maybe not better, but certainly more connected. some people just had entire servers making fun of them.

this is obvious if you play any classic/SoD/whatever. the min/max rush everything mindset completely destroys everything that made vanilla fun.

I sat through the 10 hour queues to play a huge server on classic launch, and as soon as I hit 60 no one actually cared about playing with strangers anymore and just wanted to get pre-raid BiS. I did a dungeon run with a guild group and they all said how good of a healer I was, so I asked to join their guild for raids. they literally had 8 people talking at me for the discord interview, and the 3 hour MC/Ony raid was probably the most boring raid I'd ever done, including LFR

stopped playing after that night because the alternative was sitting in org reading mind numbing lfg spam for hours to find a group that could actually make it to the dungeon entrance

Hmm, probably Vanilla but I did have a lot of fun in TBC despite all the lore lol it began. Wrath I have always found to be overrated for the most part, turning Arthas into a clown that just showed up in every zone to laugh at you. Cata got an unfair shake considering all the work that went into it .MoP was somewhat tainted by Kung Fu Panda but still solid. Everything after that had some good and a lot of bad and I barely even bothered with Shitlands. Hard to say if I will ever be able to pick it back up since so much keeps changing. The revisits to past expansions are also not authentic since everyone already knows what to min/max and go about things, only Season of Discovery seems sorta interesting currently.

Arthas was a Saturday morning cartoon villain. They even gave him a Dr. Claw voice. (The Lich King previously had a voice that merged Arthas and Nerzhul, but they ditched that for the generic deep voice).
