I loved Chong Li, dude was a fun villain to watch lol. Most of the punch and kicks looked fake as fuck tho >_> It definitely has this B-movie vibe to it, but I still liked it.

Also wtf @ this being a """"true"""" story. I heard the real Frank Dux made all this shit up back in the 80s when no one could verify it. There's no way the people of my homeland would welcome some gaijin-tryhard like him and train him lol

Ive seen that movie like over 100 times. Definitely classic 80s JVD. This will always be my favorite but I also really enjoyed Kickboxer and to a degree Lionheart. Bloodsport will always be my number 1 though. Bolo Yeung was the best villain.

The deranged faces he makes when he's slapping the opponents around was great. I can tell that Bolo Yeung definitely had a lot of fun with the role

I might be in the minority here, but the whole series is pretty good.

Dux says that the reason he no longer has a sword he was presented with at the Kumite is that he sold it in a failed attempt to buy the freedom of a boat of orphans whom he later rescued from pirates. that he stopped a plot to assassinate Steven Seagal, and that discrepancies in his martial arts history are the work of fabrications by his rivals including ninjutsu master Stephen K. Hayes.

Love the movie. Although the movie as a whole isnt great, in all honesty - its the fight related scenes (training, fighting, Dim Mak, etc). And Karate Champ. You can watch all of the best stuff on YouTube really quickly.

Blew my mind when I found out that Bolo Yeung was only around 56. The movie made him look like The Hulk.
"This includes the one with 56 KNOCKOUTS IN A ROW. At the end of the long days he claims the losers had to go home meaning it was single elimination and thats important to the math later.

...

Every time you want to add a round to a bracket you have to double the number of competitors

...

The actual number of competitors in that single elimination fictional kumite is:
74,057,594,037,927,936"

According to records obtained through the Freedom of Information Act, Dux was in the US Marine Corps Reserve, and was never posted overseas. The CIA has no record of him ever working with them. His personal brand of martial arts, Dux Ryu Ninjitsu, is also a complete fabrication.

There are some others that inspired Mortal Kombat too. I've been trying to remember the name of the movie but it has the white marble and red carpet that MK used for a stage, almost exactly.

it's a hong kong film from the 60s or 70s.

also big trouble in little china.

According to Ed Boon, the main characters are all caricatures of some of their favorite characters from martial arts and sci-fi movies:
  • Kano, with his infra-red eye, is based on Arnold Schwarzenegger's make-up in Terminator (1984).
  • Liu Kang is, obviously, the likeness of Bruce Lee.
  • Johnny Cage is based on Jean-Claude Van Damme.
  • Raiden, the electric God of thunder, is based on a lightening-wielding character from Big Trouble in Little China (1986).
  • Sonya was loosely based on martial arts star Cynthia Rothrock.
  • The Sorcerer Shang Tsung, is based on Lo-Pan, the primary antagonist from Big Trouble in Little China (1986).
  • Reptile, Scorpion, and Sub-Zero, the ninjas, are based on the American ninjas from Enter the Ninja (1981), American Ninja (1985) or Ninja Ry Ken-den (1988).

Bolo Yeung was the ultimate badass for me as a kid.
lolAmerica
Sub-Zero's Head/Spine Rip Fatality looks exactly like one of the kills in Bad Taste (1987).

Two of Johnny Cage's movies are Dragon Fist 1 & 2. In Japanese, Dragon translates to "Ryu" and Fist translates to "Ken". Ryu and Ken are the main fighters in the Street Fighter series.
