In the original it applied to all gems. Be grateful if that SMH.

There are only like 6 colored gems. The only one thats bs is the red gem. That is a gauntlet lol.

Oh is that where Crash 4 got the not dying idea.

I only bothered getting the colored gems for Crash 3 since it's the easiest one.

The remaster trilogy was the only time I'd ever beaten Crash 1, it was too ridiculous to do on the original BS ps1 version with no saving and limited lives. So that was fun.

Also beat Crash 4 recently, overall pretty good game, if super frustrating.

I enjoyed the challenge of gem collecting in Crash 1 on PS1.

There was a level called Slippery Climb I believe that was brutal but felt so good when I got the gem. I vividly remember my heart beating out of my chest when I could see the stage end and there was just one more scientist throwing explosive potions in my way. I was confident I had gotten all the boxes and managed to do it all without dying. I think I stared at that scientist enemy for about ten minutes before I worked up the nerve to kill him and finished the level to get the last gem in the game. Great times!

i almost got a purple relic doing the time trial in bear it

i dont even have the speed shoes yet (not that they help much do to this being a polar level but i would have made the time if i had them for that last stretch)

It's been on sale so many times though, that's when I got it. Last I checked it was as low as $20. It could go even lower in the next sale

yeah, in the originals it's cube shaped, so you had more generous landing space and spin range

NST was an admitted rush job that was at least partially funded by Sony because Activision refused to give VV enough funding. Coco only got to be playable to the degree she was because some developers had the time to have fun and make it happen. I think they're still solid ways to play the original trilogy but they could be improved.

I really don't know how TFB got the idea to bring back no-death gems in some form back, and actually made them even worse - most levels in Crash 4 are longer, harder, have more (of the cheapest hidden) boxes, and have other small screwy things like how a death before reaching a checkpoint still counts as you dying (this is not the case for colored gems in Crash 1 where any death only denies you the gem if you respawn from a checkpoint. This was also in PS1 Crash 1.)

uhg of course activision was activision about it

I was playing recently, too, made it through the first few levels and realized I was just barely getting by and not collecting anything...

Never did play the others as a kid but I have to hope they are better.

I got the platinum for crash 1 last month. The colored gems werent too bad actually. The time trails can fuck off though. I probably had 500-1000 deaths on that time trial alone and somehow managed to platinum it while going for gold.
im gay
speaking of deaths i really wish there was an option to turn on infinite lives

I've gotta be missing some context behind "You have to not die? That's bs!"

Dying is uh, usually a bad thing in video games.
This is a cool sig

if worried about lives and time trials there's a certain level in crash 1 that will solve your life problem. it'll give plenty if have a certain gem on that level.

also to note, i played crash bandicoot when i was in middle school with only 2-3 levels and i didn't notice much about the jumping thing though the time trials hardest was those bridge levels ( some you could use the rope but the risk of falling off ).
currently playing: elder scrolls skyrim (ps5)

I hate the bridge levels of Crash one. I go though the game feeling confident, I have a bunch of lives and than I reach Road to nowhere and lose all my extra lives. And by the time I feel confident again, bam The High Road destroys me.

You don't lose lives in Time Trial mode.

The N Sane Trilogy adds time trial modes to Crash 1 and 2 levels (Crash 3 already had this even on PS1), so you get to do that with time pressure now. And if that's not enough, the remakes also add a DLC level that's based on Slippery Climb but like 50 times harder, Stormy Ascent. (Technically this level was on the disc in the PS1 version, but could only be accessed via gameshark or similar, and had a tendency to glitch / crash. Its bonus round is entirely original to the remakes though.) The gem for it isn't a colored one so you don't need a no-deaths run for the gem, but you still do for time trial mode. The one saving grace is the time requirements are extremely generous... not that that really matters when just completing the level without dying is insanely hard to achieve.
I fought the Trumble and the Trumble won.
beat crash 2 and am on crash 3 now

is it weird i remembered the saphire relic time for the first level is 1 minute 3 seconds
