The old style square ones were vented at the square. But since it's a sippy cup lid where you put your mouth over the whole opening, there's no air intake by which you can sip at the surface.

Often, this hole is poorly perforated and thus does not provide the airflow necessary for a smooth sip. Scratch off the excess plastic, or make the hole slightly bigger with a pen or similar tool to make using such a lid a better experience.
