I'm thinking it's a lie that the tube is empty and there is always a bearing of two hiding in the tube. When it goes "through" he essentially has to throw it hard enough to knock the other bearing loose.

I don't know how it works or even if this is the right lead, but when he holds the blade the ball stops, and when he holds the handle it goes through.

I believe the dagger has a magnet in it and he's using two ball bearings.

Maybe one of the sides of the tube is shaved just enough to allow the ball through if you hold the dagger right?

It's definitely hitting something in the middle and then falling through.

He's always touching the dagger when it goes through, and presumably it only works one way, because he shows it not going through the other.

Beyond that I'm not really sure.

From watching The Masked Magician there is either a hidden trap door in the dagger the the ball bearing passes through or there is another one hidden is a secret compartment in the tube.

When he turns it up side down he drops another bearing from his hand.
