For every awful 4kids decision there was some BANGERS.

Yeah...4Kids's horrible dub that cut out whole arcs of all things is the reason One Piece took as long as it did to catch on in the West. They deserve no credit for helping that series in anyway.

The whole reason I returned to OP as an adult was because the rap is an ear worm. Was legit floored when I learned the one I watched as a kid wasn't faithful.

So for people wondering about the term "ate" in this context, it falls back to an earlier slang progression.

There has long been the question of: "What have you been feeding him?" in reference to a person (or livestock) who is particularly tall, strong, etc. It is a compliment, meant to emphasize positive physical traits as related to a healthy diet.

This has been more recently applied to things like musicians, animators, writers, game developers, etc. When a scene is particularly well-animated in a cartoon, for example, one might say either of these things: "When the animators get paid," or "What are they feeding their animators!?"

To say that someone "ate" is to suggest that they performed well above average, so in this context, the TC is saying: "4Kids did a great job by calling it the Shadow Realm"

I didn't do any specific research for this, so the details might not be 100% accurate and there might be some more to it, but that's the basic understanding I have of how the term developed.

Ok so how did Joey v Marik work?

from my memory their bodies were disintegrating into the Shadow Realm and Joey lost because he couldnt maintain his strength to play the last card and win?

so how did that actually play out? Joey passed out from really good card draw?
In the original they actually make it a point for Marik to say that he got pushed to the limit as well. Like he came out of the duel almost on the point of collapse, throwing up and all
I'm far from high end, I just know what suits me.
I'm in the middle of Battle City right now on my rewatch.

Duelist Kingdom was pretty fun due to the absolute chaos of them making up rules as they go along. Battle City is a little more stale in that regard, but the animation seems a little cleaner.

It's also nice to see an anime move at a decent clip. Duels generally last 2-3 episodes which feels like the right length. Of course, endless filler arcs are right around the corner if I recall.

As a kid, I remember completely falling off the show when they abruptly interrupted the climax of the Battle City arc with Marik to fuck around in VR with Kaiba's shitty step-brother.

In fact, I think I watched most of that arc, then never kept on to actually see the climax. I seem to remember Kaiba almost literally saying, "Well, we're going to forget that happened and never bring it up again."

I believe that was a filler arc, yes? But yeah it's a bit of a wacky place for one. You're in the middle of Battle City trying to figure out how to defeat the Big Bad Marik and then you just take a detour to go handle some VR stuff, meanwhile the whole time you're doing the VR stuff, Marik is on the airship just chilling

Yeah the original Yu-Gi-Oh anime is the most iconic, but its probably the worst show plot and pacing wise in the franchise.

Ironically 5Ds is probably the best show despite the card games on motorcycles meme.

For a lot of young anime viewers, this was our first experience with a momentum-annihilating filler arc. We didn't even know what that was, at the time, so we just thought the show randomly decided to be lame for a while.

At least Garlic Jr.'s arc in DBZ was only like 9 episodes long and took place after Namek was resolved.

The virtual world stuff in Yu-Gi-Oh was like 23 episodes long and it deflated a lot of the hype for the Battle City finals. It was such an unfortunate choice.

I think he wandered around ominously saying that this was small very interesting but then never actually did anything because it was filler lol.

I will say that I did really like the idea of the deck master mechanic or whatever it was they called it. Basically picking a monster to be on the field permanently, but it can't attack and each one has a different effect. Essentially Hearthstone's heroes, now that I think about it.

And it was also cool to have more characters involved. Like Tristan, Serenity, and Tea all had to duel at certain points, it wasn't just Kaiba, Yugi, and Joey.

In a way, the Garlic Jr. arc did serve to at least put a bit of a gap between Goku defeating Freeza and Mecha Freeza showing up on Earth. It *is* a bit anti-climactic if Freeza dies and then shows up 2 chapters later, which is exactly what happened in the DB manga

They kinda did, honestly. In the original, they always played Dark Games but the "realm" itself didn't have a name. It was just the Millennium items flexing and raising the stakes to where you were basically gambling your life on the outcome of the game, and earlier in the series, it wasn't just around the card game. There's the one most people know about where the Pharaoh played the game with the lighter, for example, which ends with the other guy's Penalty being that he's set on fire.

4Kids came in and said "we'll call it the Shadow Realm" and... You know, it kinda works. It's just cool, which is all it needs to be for you to remember it.

The part about the saw blades being turned into "magic" saw blades will always be dumb as hell though.

Marik murderated the shit out of some robots during the filler arc. To quote LK, "I can be as hardcore as I want and it'll still be PG-13."
Party leader, passive-aggressive doormat, pasta eater extraordinaire!
the dub butchered kaibas character in so many ways

having him refuse to believe in magic is just one

he was over all far less of a psychopath in the jpns version (not counting the pre duelist era stuff which is not part of the anime canon anyways)

on the subject of psychopaths the pharo in the pre duelist days was a psychopath and it was not some character arc of gaining compassion he barely counted as a anti hero

but well when the series became about marketing a card game he was toned way way down

thoe it should be noted in the jpns version the pharaoh was still not exactly the nicest guy

his sin of pride remained for most of the show

and it should be noted all his strategy actually came from yugi

One thing the animators/writers loved about Scarface in Batman TAS is that because he was a puppet, they could kill him in increasingly gruesome ways without having to censor it

In his last episode, he's shot full of holes by a tommy gun before falling into an industrial fan

I've reached the Noah Big 5 Virtual World thing.

I think I'm going to skip it for now, finish the Battle City finals, and then circle back to it.
