My first thought was to increase oxygen intake, then I started wondering if it was more to expel more CO2 when I saw the options and voted for that since I felt like it might make more sense.

I was thinking that our bodies detect co2 levels. And CO2 is a waste product from some metabolic activities. So we probably produce more CO2 and our body wants to get rid of it.

Going with the CO2 option. I know that when you exercise, the chemical reaction changes fat (C6 H12 O6) into H2O and CO2. So the answer to the question "where does fat go when you exercise?" is water and CO2. I think it's something like 25% H2O and 75% CO2. So you're breathing out the majority of the fat you lose.
It's not a single factor, surely. Your body has to work faster to take in more oxygen to keep up with the demand of that, to excrete CO2 and to dump heat (same reason why we evolved to breath out of our mouths). Probably some other mechanisms happening too.

Not sure. Increased Heart rate or increase oxygen intake would be my guesses. Was going to vote for oxygen, but voted for heart rate when I saw it. No particular reason why.

Even if we excrete more co2, doesn't breathing faster still take in more o2?
Isn't there a thing called cellular respiration that makes atp and lactic fermentation when it can't keep up?

Yeah, iirc it's to get rid of the lactic acid building up in our muscles

Or rather to keep anaerobic respiration, which is responsible for producing lactic acid buildup in the first place, to a minimum
