Yeah. Looking like an historic storm right now. There is some hope it will weaken before land fall but it will still be a major impact. The insurance market is already a mess.

Yeah this thing making landfall at or north of Tampa would be catastrophic.
What makes it hitting there worse than somewhere else?

Probably all the growth in areas that used to be swamps.

Parts of Tampa flooded with Helene and that storm was 200 miles offshore

It's where Helene made landfall. They're still recovering from that.

If it hits just north of Tampa all of the surge is going to be pushed right into the Tampa Bay. The winds would be coming in from the south. It's literally worst case scenario for them.

If it hits south of Tampa, they would get more winds going in the opposite direction and less storm surge.

Hurricane Milton is now well above Category 5 strength

Looks like soon it'll be time to increase that list with a Category 6.

Yup. The Tampa Bay area hasnt taken a direct hit in like 100 years or something. Can only hope it stays south, but its gonna be bad in any case.

That's because of a possible eyewall replacement cycle. It could intensify again. It SHOULD then weaken again as it gets close to the coast due to wind shear.
It'll get stronger tonight/ tomorrow once the Eyewall replacement is completed tonight. Now entering the warmest water in Gulf before the Northeast turn.

windy.com says landfall will be projected at Cat 3 at about 1700 Thursday, with winds approx. 126mph strong.

Even Western PA flooded in 2004 with these hurricanes. Hope 2024 isn't the same lol.

Also glad to hear you got to safety Vegy, hope everyone else out that way was able to get safe too.
I'm a long, long way from giving up
Call me old-fashioned, call me a fool
Slight better track now. Well, at least for Tampa and Orlando.

Sarasota is fucked though. :(
Has the eye hit land yet?
