Why do so many games these days have to be so brutally difficult?

Yeah, yeah, I know, skill issue.

Seriously though, I've played and beaten some very difficult games over the years. I can beat the original NES Ninja Gaiden with one hand tied behind my back, I've made Contra III my bitch many times over and have all kinds of experience with "Nintendo hard" games from the 80's and 90's.

And then there's Nine Sols. Good fucking god above, why?

I bought this game because the reviews compared it to Hollow Knight, and I was like "Fuck yeah, Hollow Knight banged". But Nine Sols is impossible. Impossible. Beat the first boss after a few tries and was like "Okay this game is tough, but it's a Souls Like, I knew that going in." Then I got to the second boss. No. Just no. Why is it designed like this? Why does the game punish you for following it's own rules? Why do the bosses have no pattern? Why does everything kill me in one hit? Why do so many people like this?

It's a shame too, because the art style is beautiful, and the story is intriguing, but the gameplay is ridiculous. It reminds me of poorly designed NES games that are hard because they're poorly programmed, except in this case it was done on purpose.

I get that hard games are the "in" thing right now, but even shit like Dark Souls and Blasphemous isn't this outrageous. It's like an arms race to design the most difficult game possible for sadists.

Sorry for the rant, but this is the first game I've bought in a while that's just been a huge disappointment.

I was about to play Nine Sols on Game Pass yesterday, but then I saw that Anuchard was about to be removed at the end of the month, and I checked and it is a short game. So I'll play that for a few days, then jump into Nine Sols .
I use Google... A lot.... >______>
These days? Ive only beaten one Mega Man game, and I still havent beaten the first Castlevania.

Well that's a shame, I've got that one on my Play Later list. I loved Hollow Knight, but I would have loved it a lot more if it didn't piss me off so frequently
Sack to crack, going to town
I wish more games would copy Rabi Ribi's approach to difficulty. Wider range of options and even the highest is never frustrating.

"Nintendo Hard" is a myth. I've beaten plenty of "super hard" NES games and they ain't got shit on stuff like:

Hollow Knight's Pantheon of Hollownest
Vanquish Tactical Challenge 6
Nioh
Shinobi PS2 on Super
Death's Gambit
Slay the Spire asencions 2+

The worst you can say about Super C or Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is that you get sent back to the start on Game Over. Which is a big deal and all, but all they take is memorization and persistence.
Arguing on CE be all like:

Because they focus on the tough and ignore the fair part. Huge difference between getting your ass handed to you and you realize your mistakes that caused it compared to some arbitrary factor that was out of your control causing you to die.

The ball is round, the game lasts 90 minutes. That's fact.
Everything else, is theory.
Most games these days aren't really that hard imo but there are certain genres where difficult games are more common and you picked a hard game out of that genre so it should be expected

It has difficulty levels, doesn't it?
