I decided to try out Pokemon Emerald Seaglass after seeing MandJTV's recent playthrough video of it ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wYZ1Hh7oHPg ) and this ROM hack has definitely made some interesting changes to some Pokemon. The one that I've seen that shocked me the most is what they did to Luvdisc of all Pokemon. They buffed Luvdisc's base SpAtk from 40 to 95 and its base Speed from 97 to 137 , making it one of the fastest Pokemon in the game. On top of that, they gave it the ability Soul-Heart (Magearna's signature ability in the actual games) which raises its SpAtk by one stage upon KO'ing an opponent. It seems like if it gets one KO and the opponent doesn't have priority moves, it snowballs and sweeps entire teams because barely anything would be able to outspeed it and almost nothing in the game can resist the coverage combination of Water, Ice, and Fairy moves. I started with Mudkip, and I was planning on using either Swampert or Masquerain as my Water type (they made Masquerain Bug/Water like it should have been from the beginning) but then I saw the terror that Luvdisc had become and I just knew I needed to use one.

Overall, this ROM hack is pretty fun. I just got to Mauville, and my team is Loudred, Weepinbell, Sableye, Mankey, and the aforementioned Luvdisc. They also gave the Mankey line the ability Gorilla Tactics (Galarian Darmanitan's ability which is basically Choice Band but as an ability) and Annihilape exists in this game too (most gen 4+ Pokemon that are related to gen 1-3 Pokemon were added) so that also sounds insane to use. Plus there's a bunch of quality-of-life features, the DexNav from OR/AS was added, and the graphics were "up-downgraded" to gen 2 vibes, because everyone knows G/S/C had the best vibes of any Pokemon game ever.

I might use this topic to talk more about my playthrough as it goes on. Or maybe not. Or maybe the mods will close it, because I always forget if we're allowed to talk about ROM hacks here if we don't actually link to how to get them. I dunno.

Wasn't Luvdisc like, one of the hardest/most annoying pokemon to catch? Maybe that's why they buffed it so much.

I've tried a couple ROM hacks before but wasn't a huge fan. One game I played was like a super edgey version of G/S and it just felt silly after a while, because Team Rocket was trying to act all gangster.

How's the general difficulty of this one? I've seen Seaglass recommended around Reddit a lot. Eventually I need to finish my run of Unbound.

I guess I missed those Luvdisc buffs while looking over the list of changes.

I played a bit of this as a nuzlocke, but haven't returned to it yet. Love those sprites.

I've been playing it off and on too... Also at Mauville having just beat Wattson...

Been fun so far and I love how everything looks...

I've played a few that tried stuff to make lesser-used Pokemon more viable.

Pokemon Rejuvenation uses Crests, held items for a given species:

Some are garbage ("Darmanitan is forced into Zen Mode while holding this crest"), some are solid or interesting changes (Luxray, "STAB on Dark moves and gains Dark-type resistances. Normal type moves are Galvanized"), some are absolutely fucking broken ("Ledian punches four times at once [any punching move becomes a 4-attack multi-hit]. Secondary effects only occur on the first two hits"). So Power-Up Punch is a Swords Dance that also hits four times.

They even have one for Luvdisc:

The Base Power of all damaging moves matches Luvdisc's happiness, capping at a Base Power of 250.

I've been playing Elite Redux that takes an interesting approach, it gives every mon 4 abilities with 1 being changeable between a few choices. I think it also rebalances stats and some typings are different as well.

It's a neat hack, just difficult enough to require good team building but not obnoxiously hard.

I don't like ROM hacks where people create their own story, because it's usually edgy crap. I generally prefer ROM hacks that stay close to the original games and just tweak stuff and add quality of life features. SmithPlays' Legacy Trio (Yellow Legacy, Crystal Legacy, and Emerald Legacy) were all great in how they rebalanced and fixed a lot of the flaws of those games while not changing too much to make them lose the original spirit of those games, and I can't recommend them enough. He didn't backport the physical/special split or any moves or abilites, he just worked within the framework of the game itself. Emerald Seaglass does a lot more to change the gameplay than Emerald Legacy (it does a lot of backporting stuff from later gens) but the story of Emerald is still intact, only slightly enhanced in small ways like adding an extra Maxie fight.

It's not meant to be a difficulty hack, but based on MandJTV's video, some trainers have some weird coverage options that can catch you off guard. It doesn't seem super difficult though. The game has the modern Exp Share for convenience, but it can be toggled off at any time. There's also a "soft Exp cap" where your Pokemon get way less Exp once you hit the level cap for the next gym leader, so overleveling is not viable at all. I might turn the Exp Share off later in the game once I get all 6 of my team members set and to relatively even levels.

Like "here's three Doubles battles in a row versus full-on perfect IV perfect EV spread competitive teams, no healing for you, loser" sort of bullshit.

I beat Wattson, got Rock Smash, boxed Sableye, went up to Route 112, and caught myself a Murkrow. I'm eventually going to need a flier for my team, and Honchkow seems like a fun pick that I haven't used in a playthrough in a while. My 6th party slot will just be a Linoone for Pickup until I decide on an actual 6th team member. I have one in mind, but it's not found until much later in the game and I could change my mind by then.

Another quality-of-life feature I like in this game: you don't actually need to teach your Pokemon HM moves. Just having the HM in your bag, a Pokemon capable of learning the move in your party, and the badge required to use it is enough to progress. So my Weepinbell can cut bushes and light up dark caves, and my Luvdisc will be able to handle all of the 7.8/10 too much water in Hoenn, all without clogging up their movesets.

I have a special appreciation for luvdisc, for years and years it was my designated wonder trade pokemon.

First spot I would come to I would catch a couple hundred of them to farm heart scales, and they would be the only Pokmon I wonder traded with my OT.

Just warms my heart knowing that over the years I have contributed to thousands of people receiving that little bastard

If it's a GBA ROM hack, you might be able to convert it to a .cia and install it that way. I know I've installed legit GBA games (aside from the Ambassador games that were already compatible) on my 3DS that way in the past, but I don't remember if I ever tried it with a ROM hack.

oop, slight lie, I would also wonder trade breedjects so decent stuff and luvdisc is all ya got

honestly it started as a bit of a joke, here get another useless wonder trade but at least its a cute little heart

eventually after I saw so much of it I actually started to like the little guy and even EV trained a couple would be fun to use one as my ace in a game

I did the Team Magma stuff at Mt. Chimney, swept Flannery with Luvdisc, evolved some of my Pokemon, and saved outside of Norman's gym. My team is Loudred, Weepinbell, Primeape, Honchkrow, and Luvdisc. I do have the Leaf Stone to evolve Weepinbell, but I'm waiting until it learns Sludge at Lv32 for Poison STAB before I evolve it. The Bellsprout line has Adaptability in this game. Oh yeah, I forgot to mention...

Emerald Seaglass has following Pokemon like HG/SS, except better . You can set any Pokemon in your party as your "preferred" follower so it doesn't need to be in the lead spot of your party to follow you, plus can put your follower back in its Pokeball at any time so it doesn't interfere with your movements while you're moving around in grass or caves.

I beat Norman (not as easy as I hoped it would be with Primeape), got Surf, went up Route 119, did the Team Aqua stuff at the Weather Institute, made it to Fortree City, and got the Devon Scope to deal with the Kecleon roadblock. Along the way, I caught a Scyther to be the final member of my party, and I also located the Black Augurite on the same route. So because I didn't buy Legends Arceus, this is the first time that I can actually use a Kleavor in a Pokemon game! Interestingly, they didn't backport the Sheer Force ability into this ROM hack, so Kleavor has Technician as its 2nd ability like Scyther and Scizor do. That opens up some other move options like Rock Tomb as its primary Rock move and Thief for Dark coverage, since both of those have 60 base power and would be boosted to 90 by Technician. I could have DexNav'd for a hidden ability Scyther to use Kleavor's Sharpness ability, but I didn't feel like doing the extra work for that.

Once I evolve Loudred and Primeape, my final team will be set. The only thing that could make me swap out a team member at this point would be finding a random shiny that would also be interesting to use, but that's unlikely.

You're thinking Feebas. One area in the game, only on 6 tiles in the lake it shows up at, and it's determined by the trendy phrase. There's no ingame way of seeing which specific tiles there are so you had to keep checking every one until you found it.

Luvdisc just showed up super late. You'd find it right before you reached Victory Road, at which point your team is likely locked in. All for a mon terribly underwhelming.

So yeah, any fangame that buffs it is awesome.

I want to play this but I'm not really comfortable or confident with emulators. Don't you need the base game as a ROM and need to patch it or something? I prefer the stand alone downloads like pokemon infinite fusion.

It was similarly awful to catch in the Sinnoh games, except it was only 4 tiles and they changed randomly every day rather than being tied to something that you could manipulate with an external calculator like the trendy phrase. I've still to this day never caught a Feebas legitimately in a Hoenn or Sinnoh game because of that weird bullshit with it only being found on certain tiles. Every Feebas or Milotic I have, I either caught through a different method in a different game, traded for, or bred from one I already had.

Yes, this ROM hack is downloaded as an IPS patch. You need to have a patcher to apply the IPS patch (I use Lunar IPS) and an unmodified Pokemon Emerald ROM (which they will not provide and we will not help you find). I'm pretty sure Pokemon Infinite Fusion could get away with being a standalone download because it was made from scratch rather than being a patch of an existing Pokemon game.

I beat Winona, then went through Routes 120-121 to get to Lilycove City. On the way, both Primeape and Loudred evolved, so my team is fully set and fully evolved now. I checked Exploud's learnset in this ROM hack, and not only did they backport Boomburst for it, they also gave it Overdrive (Toxtricity's signature move) for Electric coverage. They shortened the move's description to say "the user attacks with strong vibrations" which makes more sense as a generic sound-based attack than its original description in Sw/Sh and S/V which was more specific to Toxtricity.

Also, since my whole team is fully evolved and their levels are balanced out, I'm going to turn off the Exp Share now.

I only used Annihilape in Pokemon Emerald Rogue, but that thing may be the one of the best regular Pokemon they've ever created. Great bulk, hits like a truck, has pretty good speed, an excellent signature move, and the best possible offensive typing you could ask for in a Pokemon.

Just a very fun mon to use.

Your topic inspired me to play the game and I think I started over the weekend. Got through Fortree City last night. Swampert is smashing through most battles. I also appreciate they added the Link Cable items or whatever to evolve trade Pokemon.

My team is Swampert, Alakazam, Ninetails, Pidgeot, Meganium and a rotating 6th slot. I got a random Torchic from somewhere I thought about using for my fire mon and kind of want to get a Ghastly for Gengar to finish out the 6th slot. Probably not the best team, but I think I only whited-out once so far.

I dealt with Team Aqua at Mt. Pyre, Team Magma in their hideout, Team Aqua again in their hideout, made my way to Mossdeep, and I'm currently saved in front of Tate/Liza. I think they'll be easy because I have a lot of attacks to hit their team super effectively, but they're always tougher than I expect because of the double battle format. Exploud's Boomburst (with Annihilape as the partner unaffected by it) is fantastic at cleaning up random double battles throughout the game, but I don't think it'll be as useful against Tate/Liza due to their Pokemon's secondary typings.

I also have a lot of free time and play 99% of the game with the fast forward button held down. 4x speed feels essential to me in 2D pokemon now.

Fair enough. I actually haven't figured out how to enable the fast-forward function with GBA games on the device I play on (one of those Anbernic emulator handhelds) so I've been playing on 1x speed the whole time. But even if I did figure it out, I wouldn't use it the very first time I play through a game or ROM hack anyways, so I can really enjoy the experience. For repeat playthroughs of games I've played before, I'd probably use it.

I'm impatient. The animations, walking speed, it all feels sooo slow in these games. And hatching eggs? Yeah, let me just run around for a week IRL. Even with fast forward and on a bike, it took way longer than I expected to hatch the few eggs I got (hotsprings and one from the casino).

i think you're thinking of feebas, which turns into milotic.

luvdisc is just like a regular pokemon, feebas only spawned in six, four in later games, tile(s), randomly, in one specific region.

and, it had a low encounter rate even if you did find its tile, which usually just led people to think it wasn't in a tile even if they did have the correct one

it wasn't something you could just move around and find, either, you had to fish for it.

I didn't find it that bad. For the early-game you can toggle auto-run on by pressing R, then later on you get the mach bike. That's fast enough for me. Then again, I didn't do any breeding or egg hatching at all, which is the most tedious thing in these games. The only "grindy" thing I did was using the DexNav feature to try and catch certain Pokemon with an egg move or their hidden ability, but since the DexNav requires sneaking up on shaking patches of grass, the fast forward function can actually mess you up sometimes.

Oh, was it R to toggle auto-run? I might've only used FF for battles if I would've realized that. Oh well. I don't do any breeding or anything either. Both eggs I got, I just wanted to see if they were something great. And yeah, FF definitely ruins the DexNav.

I finished the Team Magma/Aqua story and have all 8 badges, now all that's left for me is to beat the Elite 4 and Champion which I'll probably do later tonight. The battles against Tate/Liza, Maxie, and Archie were actually kind of tough, partly due to them having better teams in this ROM hack and partly because the levels have caught up to me since I turned off the Exp Share. It makes me want to do a 2nd playthrough where I have it off from the very beginning for the extra challenge. I'm a bit sad that Juan didn't have a Luvdisc like he does in the original game, because I wanted to do a Luvdisc vs. Luvdisc honor battle.

Are you playing on the standard difficulty or did you turn hard mode on?

Also, you surpassed me! I left off the other night right after Cave of Origin so now I have to go find the Sky Tower.

How early can you catch a Luvdisc? It's a fun hack and I might do a 2nd run as well with a different starter and some Pokemon I never use. I know there's some built in cheats, including getting different Pokemon right at the beginning you can use as alt starter. Spheal of all Pokemon being one. I started this a couple days ago but didn't get far yet, just up to the first gym.

I forgot how bare bones the original versions of the early games are, it was so quick just to get to that part >_>

The earliest you can catch Luvdisc in the wild is the Pacifidlog Scuba Safari mini-game. A guy in Slateport can fly you to Pacifidlog (much earlier than you get there in the original game) where you can play the Scuba Safari, which is basically like the Johto Bug-Catching Contest but in the water. You can catch some interesting Water-types there, and Luvdisc is one of them. So you can catch a Luvdisc with only 2 badges.

Of course, you could also get lucky (like I did) and get one from the Rustboro Wishing Well. Why they decided to put what is essentially a gacha system into a Pokemon ROM hack is beyond me, but if you're lucky with your Wishing Stars you throw into the well, you can get some late-game Pokemon without even having a single badge. That's how I got my Luvdisc, and the well also gave me a Bagon that I decided not to use.

I love the wishing well! That might've been how I got my Torchick.

I did the scuba safari thing once and didn't catch a single pokemon so I gave up on it. Don't think I caught anything worthwhile in the safari zone either. Oh well.

The well is pretty early too, isn't it? I think one of the cheats was 99 wishing stars, so maybe I'll do, queue up a random number generator and use that number of catches to be my starter...or whole team.

It was so fun that I'm already itching to do that 2nd playthrough on hard mode. I already have team ideas for it too. This time, I might actually keep my starter for the whole playthrough instead of boxing it for something else! Sorry about that, Mudkip.
