I studied IT a couple years ago. Had a couple jobs, got laid off last October. Got an email asking about if I had a valid CompTIA certification. The moment I told the interviewer that I didn't, they told me I wouldn't get an interview. It's pretty messed up that my entire 2 year diploma is practically worthless in favour of a virtual piece of paper that costs 500 CAD to even attempt the test. I know its valuable, it's just depressing, considering I can't really afford to take the test atm.
I really think diplomas are going to be worthless in the future. So many people just show up to class, graduate, and have no idea how to apply anything they learn in the world.

Keep doing what you are doing. Put together a portfolio proving you can do good work. Eventually you will find someone who needs what you can do, and they will know you can do it.

Thanks :)

My ultimate goal is to own a small little repair shop, probably hire people either with little experience or just out of college only, to limit this nonsense in the future as much as possible.
Im not sure what you are looking for, but I work for a K12 public school district and we are often looking for techs. Our department seems to have a high turnover rate. Have you looked for roles with education entities? We have techs who work at the sites and other techs who work mostly in the back room. So even if you dont like kids/people, dont write off K12 or higher ed as an option.
